Abstract
166,775. James, R. W., (Remington Type writer Co.). May 20, 1920. Ink-ribbon mechanism.- Relates to ink-ribbon vibrator and feed mechanisms and to a spool-retainer especially for portable typewriters, and is shown in Fig. 4 applied to the portable machine described in Specification 150,705. (1) A vibrator-operating lever is coupled to the universalbar frame by means of a wire which, for adjusting the throw of the vibrator, can be shifted to cause the main part or an offset to engage the universal-bar frame. The ink ribbon 64, Fig. 4, passes through a vibrator or slide 121 having ears 123 engaging a bracket 122 on the type-lever segment. The vibrator-operating lever consists of arms 128, 134, which are united by a yoke 135 and are pivoted on a pin 130, Fig. 9, carried by a bracket 132 on the carriage-shift frame 43. The arm 128 is connected by a link 125 to the vibrator. The universal-bar frame, pivoted on the carriage-shift frame, is provided with an arm 148 formed with a slot or finger 152 engaging a coupling-wire 140 which passes through slots 136, 137 in the arms 128, 134. The wire is formed at one end with a cranked finger 142 which enters a forked lug 146 on the arm 128, the lug being bent to adjust the wire laterally. The wire is formed with an offset 145 and can be shifted longitudinally to place either the main part or the offset in engagement with the slot or finger 152 and thereby adjust the throw of the vibrator to present the black or red stripe respectively at the printing-point. The wire is shifted by means of a finger-lever coupled by a link 161 to a bell-crank 156 having a slotted lug 160 engaging the cranked finger 142. The finger-lever passes through a slot, having indicating-marks, and is retained resiliently by engagement with a convex wall of the slot. The vibrator is arrested in position for presenting the black or red stripe, by means of stop-fingers 154, 153 which engage the offset and main part of the wire respectively. The stop-fingers are formed on the bracket 132 and can be bent for adjustment. The vibrator is provided with a wire loop having fingers for holding-down the ink-ribbon. (2) The ink-ribbon spools 61, Figs. 4 and 6, are revoluble on posts 65 threaded to the top of posts 70 secured to brackets 42, the lower flanges of the spools having lugs 62 for engaging pins 74 on bevelwheels 73 revoluble on the posts 70. A driving shaft 85, mounted in the posts 70, is provided with bevel-wheels 86 for engaging the bevel-wheels 73 and can be shifted, to reverse the feed, by means of knobs 87. The shaft is retained by means of a wire loop 90 which engages one of two grooves 89 in the shaft, the grooves being separated by a bulge. The shaft is provided with a ratchet-wheel 91 engaging a pawl 97 pivoted' on a forked lever 95 engaging a long pin 104 on the universal-bar frame. A wide detent 108, pivoted on a shaft 56, is provided for the ratchet-wheel. The ratchet-wheel is secured to a sleeve 92 on the shaft, and the lever 95 can rock on the sleeve and is constrained by the ratchet-wheel and a flange 94 on the sleeve. Pressure-plates 114 for the inkribbon are pivoted on posts 116 and engaged by springs 120. (3) The spools are each associated with a retainer or latch 76, Fig. 6, formed with a lug 77 which stands above the upper flange. The latch passes through a cross slot 65 into the post 65 and is provided with a pin 82 which is held in contact with the top of the post by a spring 81 arranged between the top of the post and a washer 80 on the latch. To release the spool the latch is pushed side-ways, the pin 82 riding from a ledge 83 to a ledge 84.
