Abstract

Gas exits.-A gas exit comprises a chamber c provided with two coaxial tubes d, e, the tube d which leads to the atmosphere being closed or baffled at its lower end i and having lateral openings k, the tube e depending into the cell to such a distance that its lower end is above the electrolyte in all positions of the cell. The tube e may be baffled at its lower end and have lateral openings, and both tubes may be slightly tapered. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the tube d is bifurcated as shown at l. In order to keep the lower end of the tube e always above the electrolyte the tube may be flexible and fitted with a float. Two forms are shown in Figs. 7 and 9. In Fig. 7 the float n is fixed to a plug o carried by the tube e, the gas escaping through the annular space n<1> and holes p in the plug. In Fig. 9, the float n is provided with passages q which communicate with openings s in the tube e. In another form the float is provided with a central opening and surrounds the open end of the tube e, the float being fixed to or slidable over the tube.
