Abstract

166,164. Challiner, W. May 22, 1917. Disc wheels.-In built-up metal wheels, the nave of the wheel consists of two side plates 16, Figs. 1 and 2, which are flanged inwardly at the outer edge and formed with bosses 19 conforming to the sectional shape of the spokes, and have lugs 23 pressed inwardly out of the material of the plates to embrace the sides of the spokes and leave the edge thereof exposed to enable the spokes and plates to be welded together in that region. In the construction described, the spokes are formed by T-section bars placed back to back, and may be welded to the bosses 19. Between the spokes, the side plates may have abutting radial flanges 26, Fig. 5, riveted together. The support, for the inner ends of the spokes may be provided by a separate tubular member 25, Figs. 1 and 2, or the inner edges of the side plates may be flanged inwardly, Fig. 5. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the edges of the spokes are provided with tenons 29 passing through slots 30 in the side plates, which have inwardly projecting bosses 31 stamped in them between and embracing the sides of the spokes.
