Abstract

164,128. Rondelli, T., Sestini, Q., and Sestron Colour Oxidising Co., Ltd. March 2, 1928. Addition to 106,774. Metallic oxides, obtaining; treating after electrolysis.-Iron and steel articles are coloured by anodic oxidation in a hot concentrated alkaline liquid. A caustic soda solution, having a boiling- point of 135-180‹ C., is suitable. Organic or inorganic oxidizing agents, such as nitrates and chlorates, may be present; 10-20 per cent sodium nitrate may, for instance, be added. The temperature may be 5-15‹ C. below the boiling-point of the electrolyte, and the articles are left in sufficiently long to attain the same temperature, current being passed either throughout the whole time of immersion or only after the articles are hot. For steel of ordinary hardness, the current density may be 10-15 amperes per sq. dcm. Violet or bronze colours may be obtained. After drying, the coloured articles may be dipped in olive oil or a mixture of linseed and mineral oil, heated to 150-180‹ C.
