Abstract
163,540. Fairbrother, H., (Fox Typewriter Co.). March 17, 1920. Folding type - lever machines.-The support 3, Fig. 2, for the papercarriage 11 is mounted at each side on two links 4, 8, which are connected to the base 2 by pivots 6, 9, and are connected to the support and arms thereon by pivots 7, 10 respectively, the pivots 9 being above and in front of the pivots 6, and the distance between the pivots 7, 10 being greater than that between the pivots 6, 9. The links 4 are connected by a cross-bar 5. The carriage is raised from the collapsed position, at the rear of the machine, by means of finger-pieces 63 which are pivoted to the links 4 and are formed with slots 63<1> engaging the pivots 9. Notches at the ends of the slots lock the carriage in the collapsed or raised position. A frame 1 supporting the action is mounted inside the base 2. The type-levers 24, Fig. 3, are pivoted in a segment 14 and are connected by horizontal links 26 to horizontal bars 27, supported at rear by links 29 and supported at the front by a bar 28 and a comb 28<1> engaging slots 27<1>. Key-levers 30, fulcrumed on a bar 32 and arranged below the bars 27, are provided with pins 34 engaging slots 35 in the links 29. A rest 38 for the type-levers is supported by arms 38<1>, Fig. 5, on the segment. Case-shift mechanism; shift-key actions.-The segment 14 is mounted at each side on arms 15, 19 pivoted to the frame 1, the arms 19 being connected to balancing-springs 23. The segment normally rests on screw-stops 49. The segment is raised for printing figures by means of a shiftkey lever 50, Fig. 5, which rocks on a pivot 9 and engages a finger 52 on one of the arms 15, the movement of the segment being limited by a screw-stop 48, Fig. 3. The segment is raised for printing capitals by means of a shift-key lever 53 which is pivoted at 54 to the lever 50 and engages the finger 52. A screw-stop is arranged in the path of the lever 50. Letter-spacing mechanism.-A universal bar 39, Fig. 3, in the path of shoulders 27" on the bars 27 is secured to arms which are mounted on pivots 40 on the frame 1, and are connected by links 43, Fig. 2, to a bar 47 secured to rocking arms 45. Locking-devices.-When the paper-carriage 11 is moved to the folded position, the cross-bar 5 of the arms 4 engages and locks the key-levers 30.
