Abstract
162,574. Gourriet, F. V. June 28, 1920. Milling-machines. - A machine particularly designed for slotting the head and stems of poppet valves holds the work in or on a sliding plunger fed by a spring against a cutter mounted in a frame that can be swung aside to facilitate loading the work-holding fixture. For cutting the collar slot in the stem, the valve is held in a V-block 44, located on the head of the plunger 6 by dowels, by a spring-controlled V -block 48 against an adjustable end .stop 52. The plunger is guided by pins 7 engaging slots in the body 4 adjustable in a base 1 that may be secured to a bench. A cam ring 31 is rotatable by hand on the body to bring raised flats 32 under the pins 11 on which the cutter-frame 12 is trunnioned, thus maintaining the plunger depressed in opposition to a feeding-spring 9. A stop 34 on the cam determines this position. The cutter-spindle is mounted in bearings 13 in the frame 12 braced by a bridge 17 carrying adjustable screws 18 that take the cutting thrust close up to the cutter 15. With the swing frame in the operative position slots 22 engage pins 23 and a stirrup 24 is passed between a hasp 28 and the body for locking by a nut 30 on a pin 26 passing through a slot in the hasp. When the frame is secured in this position the cam is operated to allow the spring to feed the work-carrying plunger to the cutter that is rotated by a hand-crank 16 or by power. After cutting into the stem from one side the work is indexed 180‹ by a plunger 55 with bevelled ends resting on spring-pressed balls 38 in a bore in the plunger and snapping into the slot just milled. A finger-piece 57 enables this action to be felt. For slotting the head of the valve, the fixture 44 is removed and the valve is centred by the balls 38 and by the conical surface 41 under the head. Milling-cutters. - The cutter arbor is integral with the cutter and is reduced in diameter in proximity thereto in order to obtain maximum penetration with a small diameter. In a modification, the cutter is integral with the reduced diameter portion only, the end portions 14, Fig.. 11, being screwed on.
