Abstract
162,503. Spivey, F. March 24, 1920. Mines, marine.-To prevent a moored submarine mine from being swept aside by a paravane or like device, the mine A is provided with quadrant vanes B hinged at C and normally held folded against the lower part of the mine, as shown in Fig. 1, by a ring F which fits over spring tongues D at the ends of the vanes. The ring F is held up by a spring J abutting against a stop L fixed to the mooring cable K; and a weight N slidable over the mooring- cable is hung from the ring F by a pair of ropes M to which is fastened a transverse bar P carrying a pair of serrated jaws R and slidable over the mooring-cable. When a sweeping- cable G encounters the cable M, the latter is bent, as shown in Fig. 3, the sweeping-cable is guided into the. jaws R and pulls the ring F down against its spring J; whereupon the vanes D are opened out by springs E and by the water Sowing past them until stopped by chains H. The increased drag due to the vanes causes the mine to strike and explode against the side of the ship from which the paravane is towed.
