Abstract
161,645. Holt, H. E. S. Jan. 8, 1920. Addition to 157,472. Wearing apparel for aviators; braces and straps and bands.- Relates to improvements in or modifications of the invention described in the parent Specification and consists in providing pockets or cases as an integral part of the aviator's garment for receiving the main and one or more pilot parachutes. A timing-device for controlling the release of the pilot or main parachute is provided. The aviator's coat e, Figs. 2 and 5, has a pocket j for the main parachute and one or more smaller pockets for the pilot parachute. The main supporting rope a is fastened to a harness, whilst ropes a<1>, a<2> connecting the top of the main parachute to the others are attached to a ring f, which is releasable by the rope g<5> on release of the lever h by the aviator. The outer part of the pocket j is formed by a flap j<1> laced by links j<2>, the upper one being held by a pin which can be pulled out by the wire j<7> by a timing-gear or by the pull of the pilot parachute. A flat, spiral, or other spring may be placed in the pocket to facilitate ejection of the main parachute. The flap of the pilot parachute container is fastened to a lug n by a withdrawal pin n<1> connected by Bowden wire with a timing- device o. The device comprises a spring-driven timing-disc o<1>, Fig. 12, balanced escapement, driving-springs o<3> with winding head o<6>. The gear is locked by a pin j<3> attached by a breaking cord p to the aircraft. On release of the timing- gear, the disc o<1> is turned until a notch therein allows the spring r to push the rod q and so operate the Bowden wire s for releasing the parachute. By interposing a withdrawable pin between the rod q and the notched disc, the bar can be operated independently of the timing-gear. The bar may be directly attached to a catch on the flap without interposing a Bowden-wire gear. In a further modification, the catch may be operated by a pivoted instead of a sliding bar.
