Hand-stamps; embossing and stamping.-An appliance for marking metallic or other objects with letters, numerals, or other marks, consists of a circular disc provided with teeth which are formed as dies, or to carry type, and provided with indicating marks, &c. corresponding to the dies, &c. the marks being arranged diametrically opposite to the die, &c. The impression is taken by striking a blow with a hammer at the indicating mark. In its simplest form, Fig. 1, for marking numerals on metal, the disk a is formed with teeth b on which the dies corresponding to the numerals are arranged, and the upper part of the disc a is marked with the numerals. When it is desired to mark a particular numeral on a sheet of metal, the corresponding mark is brought into the top position by turning the device about the central aperture c, and the device is struck by a hammer to make the mark. In a modification of this, Fig. 4, a disc is fitted with one set of teeth f bearing dies corresponding to letters, and with a second set g corresponding to numerals each set occupying a half of the periphery of the appliance. The two sets are in different vertical planes, and the teeth are fitted with inclined sides k to direct the blows on to the cylindrical surface i. In a further modification, Fig. 6, a disc o fitted with teeth p fitted with type q corresponding to both letters, and numerals, or to other marks, is fitted in a bridge-piece r provided with a flat top y for receiving the blows, and formed with an indicating slot a by means of which the desired type is brought into position.
