Abstract

160,973. Schroeder, A., and Rogers, H. C. Jan. 12, 1920. Sweeping - machines; pneumatic collectors.- Consists in an arrangement of sectional brushes, dirtreceiving tray, and suction nozzles in one machine, so that these parts may more readily adapt themselves to uneven road surfaces. A series of brush-carrying frames 22, shown in plan in Fig. 14, is mounted on a transverse shaft 21 carried by castings 20 at the lower ends of arms 19, which arms are pivoted at their forward and upper ends to the ends of a shaft 17. The brushes 27 are carried by endless chains 26 running on sprocket-wheels 23. 25. The sprocketwheels 23 are mounted on the shaft 21 which is rotated through a chain-drive 28 by a motor 14. The separate frames 22 enable the brushes to adapt themselves to inequalities of the road surface. The brush-pressure on the road is regulated by pins 35 on a worm-driven wheel or crank 36, which pins act upon cranks 32, pivoted at 34, and lift connecting-rods 33 connected to rearward extensions 31 of the castings 20. A separate device is provided to raise the brushes off the road entirely, and comprises depending cranks 47 engaging a channel-section cross bar 44 from which hang stirrups 43 supporting hanging brackets 40. The brackets 40 engage the shaft 21 by slots 41 and have forwardly-extending arms 99, Fig. 14, which support a cross-bar 100 passing through all the frames 22. The dirt is swept by the brushes on to an inclined tray 56 which is hinged at 55 to the lower end of a conveyer shaft 54. The outer part 58 of the tray is hinged to the part 56, and the tray is connected by links 64 to the arms 19. A series of suction nozzles 85 is carried by a rod 84 connecting the rear ends of the extensions 31 of the castings 20. Each nozzle is ela.stically-connected to the rod 84, and, by a flexible pipe 90, to a suction head 89 connected by a duct 91, to a suction fan 92. The dust collected by the nozzles passes up an exhaust pipe 94 into a chamber 95 in the top of the vehicle, and thence into porous bags 98. The nozzles are enclosed by a curtain 84<a>.
