Driving-gear; impeller blades.-A pocket rotary fan has blades 27, 28, 29 which fold one over the other and are mounted loosely on a spindle 21 carried by a slide 5, 6. The slide is supported in a slideway 2 with a toothed rack 1 upon one side engaging a pinion 18 upon the spindle 17 carried by the slide. Wheels 19, 20 upon the spindles 17, 21 are also in engagement, and the spindle 21 also carries a ratchet wheel 22 which, in one direction of rotation, engages a pawl disc 23 connected by pins to the fan blades. Two fingers are held against the projections 13, 14 on the slide and the thumb is pressed against the button 3. The relative motion of the rack and slide causes rotation of the spindle 21, the teeth of the ratchet wheel 22 engage the tongues of the pawl disc 23 and cause the fan blades to rotate. Shoulders on the blades are engaged by a pin joining the discs 23, 25 when the three blades are 120‹ apart. When the stroke of the slide is completed, the manual pressure is relaxed and the spring 35 restores the slide to its original position. During this return motion the ratchet wheel slides over the tongues on the pawl disc, and the fan blades continue to rotate by reason of their momentum. In a modification, the pinion 18 carries a pawl which drives a loose wheel on the spindle 17 in one direction, but rides freely in the reverse direction.
