Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CARAVAN SEATS AND BEDS (71) We, DANBURY CONVERSIONS LIMITED, a British Company, of Danbury, near Chelmsford, Essex, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to seats for caravans, and particularly motor caravans.
Space saving is, of course, of paramount importance in caravans, and this is particularly true in relation to the seats which are virtually essential for motor caravans. It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved seat assembly for a motor caravan.
According to the present invention a seat assembly for a caravan comprises a seat base in the form of a storage compartment, and an end part of the assembly being movable from a retraced position at the seat base to an extended position spaced from the seat base and where the end part supports one end of an extension member the other end of which is supported at the seat base, so that a bed base is provided, characterised in that said seat base provides a substantially rectangular storage compartment, and the movable end part is carried at the ends of horizontal members which are slidable in tubular members accomodated in corner regions of the compartment.
Preferably, the movable end part comprises an upright wall, and the extension member comprises a flat board.
Preferably also, said horizontal members are in the form of three horizontal rods slidably accommodated in said tubular members which comprise two upper and one lower tubes.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a seat assmebly in a motor caravan; Figure 2 is a sectional elevation corresponding to Figure 1; and, Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the assembly in an extended state to act as a bed.
Referring to the drawings, the seat assembly is formed largely from wood and is mounted on floor 10 of the caravan and against caravan wall 11.
The assembly comprises a fixed vertical side wall 12, fixed end walls 13 and 14, and a lid formed as two hinged parts 15 and 16. At least one cushion 17 indicated in broken lines in Figure 2, may be provided for the seat, and a backrest indicated at 18 may be slotted in between the parts 15 and 16 when a forward-facing seat is required. The bottom of the backrest may be received between horizontal strips 19 secured to the floor or upright support strips may be secured to the walls Island 12.
In accordance with the invention, the assembly further comprises a movable end wall 20 carried by tubular metal rods 21. The rods 21 are telescopically slidable within three fixed support tubes 22 which extend between the fixed wall 13 and a partition 23.
The wall 20 is movable from a retracted position against wall 13, as shown in Figures I and 2, to an extended position as shown in Figure 3. The wall 20 can be held in the retracted position by a bolt 24 which enters a recess in the caravan floor 10, and is arrested in the extended position by engaging a stop 25. A bolt recess may also be provided at the extended position. As shown in Figure 3, when the wall 20 is extended, a board 26 provides a continuation of the seat parts 16 and 15 to adapt the assembly for use as a bed.
The board rests on a flat area at the top of the fixed end wall 13, being located against fixed lid part 27, and fits into a slot 28 in the end wall 20.
It will be noted that two projections 29 are secured to the underside of the board 26 and corresponding recesses 30 are formed in the lid part so that the board can be stowed on top of the lid part, as shown in Figure 2.
The seat assembly according to the invention is thus readily convertible into a bed unit without the provision of accessories occupying valuable space. Also, the storage space within the compartment defined by the walls 12 and 13 is only marginally restricted, even in the retracted position of the movable wall 20 as the support tubes 22 are accommodated in the corner regions of the compartment.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A seat assembly for a caravan, comprising a seat base in the form of a storage compartment, and an end part of the assembly being movable from a retraced position at the seat base to an extended position spaced from the seat base and where the end part supports one end of an extension member the other end of which is supported at the seat base, so that a bed base is provided, characterised in that said seat base provides a substantially rectangular storage compartment, and the movable end part is carried at the ends of horizontal members which are slidable in tubular members accommodated in corner regions of the compartment.
2. A seat assembly as claimed in Claim 1, in which the said movable end part comprises an upright wall.
3. A seat assembly as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2, in which said horizontal members are in the form of horizontal rods slidably accommodated in said tubular members which comprise two upper and one lower tubes.
4. A seat assembly as claimed in any preceding Claim, in which a two-part hinged lid forms the top of said compartment and an upright backrest is arranged to be fitted between the parts of said lid.
5. A seat assembly as claimed in any preceding Claim, in which said extension member comprises a flat board.
6. A seat assembly as claimed in Claim 5, in which said flat board is arranged to be stored on top of said lid.
7. A seat assembly, substantially as here inbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A caravan provided with at least one seat assembly according to any preceding
