Description

(54) STACKABLE CONTAINERS SUITABLE FOR PACKAGING FOODSTUFFS We, UNILEVER LIMITED, a company organised under the laws of Great Britain, of Unilever House, Blackfriars, London E.C.4., England, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to stackable containers, suitable for the packaging of food products, and to packaged food products contained therein.
Numerous arrangements for stackable containers are known, for a variety of purposes such as for example ensuring sealing stability or enabling lids and containers to be stacked separately or together. Examples are described in GB Patent Specifications 1,267,687, 1,158,383 and 1,146,986.
According to the present invention there is provided a stackable container suitable for packaging foodstuff, comprising a frustoconical (as herein-after defined) tub having a recessed base with a folded-beaded periphery, and a beaded mouth edge to the tub, and provided with a lid of transparent material which overlaps the beaded mouth edge to the tub and which has an upwardly opening annular groove located inwardly of the periphery of the lid, the groove having a size and shape enabling it to receive the folded-beaded periphery of the base of another container of similar form. By "frustoconical" we mean of truncated conical or other flared shape which need not have a circular transverse section but can also have a transverse section of another form, e.g. elliptical.
A container of this form is particularly, for example, suited according to the invention to the packaging of foodstuffs filled into the tub in liquid or pasty condition and given a top surface covering of decorative material. An example is decorated ice cream, with decorative material projecting above the general surface of the remaining tub contents, and e.g. above the level of the base of the upwardly opening annular groove. The complementary form of peripheral lid groove and base enables the containers when filled with such material to be stacked without mechanical deformation and damage to the easily deformable contents.
The container tub can be suitably, for example, of a non-transparent printable material such as hard paper, and the lid can, for example, be of such transParent material as clear polyvinyl chloride sheet, e.g.
formed by deep-drawing. The form of the tub also enables stacking of empty tubs as well as filled lidded tubs.
The upper lid surface can be generally flat apart from the annular groove therein. The lid can overlap the beaded mouth edge to the tub by means of a peripheral downwardly-extending flange, and in a preferred embodiment this flange can form, together with the outer wall of the upwardly-opening annular groove, a downwardly-opening peripheral annular groove.
The outer edge of the base of the upwardlyopening annular groove, which can thus also form the edge of the inner wall of the downwardly opening groove, can abut the inner surface of the tub near its mouth edge. This arrangement gives additional mechanical support to a stacked tub received in the upwardly-opening annular groove, especially where the tub body has an annular rib at the place of abutment.
Preferably, the upwardly-opening annular groove of the lid is of a size to embrace rather closely the beaded periphery of the base another container of similar form stacked thereon, and the downwardly opening annular groove is of a size to embrace the mouth edge of the tub rather closely, but the mating between the base periphery and upwardly opening lid groove should not be so tight as to cause accidental opening of tubs when a stack of the containers is being dismantled.
The tubs in a preferred embodiment have a circular cross-section with an upper diameter of about 65 to about 110 mm and a height of about 35 to about 60 mm. With such tubs the dimensions of the tub and the lid are so chosen that the inner diameter of the upwardly opening annular groove of the lid is at most 2 mm smaller, and the outer diameter of the same groove is at most 10 mm larger, than the inner diameter and the outer diameter, respectively, of the beaded periphery of the recessed base of the tub and the depth of the upwardly opening annular groove of the lid is at most 2 mm less than the height of the recessed base of the tub. Similar relative dimensions are effective if the container has e.g. an elliptical cross-section.The dimensions given above, which also demonstrate a preferred flared form of the tub, should in any case be so chosen as to make it impossible for the bottom bead of a tub to get tightly fixed in the inner annular groove of a lid, so that on lifting a tub from a stack the lid of the tub below it will not be opened or torn off.
One embodiment of a stackable container according to the invention is diagrammatically represented on the accompanying drawing, showing two stacked tubs. The upper tub is filled according to the invention with decorated foodstuff and drawn in section, the lower tub only being shown in section, in part, in the area of its lid.
The stackable container shown in the drawing has a tub 1 and a lid 2. It is filled with a foodstuff 3, on the surface 4 of which an additional decoration 5 has been applied before the placing of the lid 2.
The tub 1 has a frustoconical body 11, an upper beaded mouth edge 12, and a base wall 13 having a peripheral beaded edge 14 formed by inward folding. Edge 14 and wall 13 provide a hollow space under the wall 13, designated as recessed base 15. The lid has a downwardly-opening peripheral annular groove 21, which tightly engages the beaded mouth edge 12, and an upwardly opening annular groove 22, located inwardly of the lid periphery and inwardly adjacent groove 21. The lid has a flat central lid surface 23.
Under the lid surface 23 there is a space 24 which in this embodiment contains a decorative upper portion 5 of the packaged foodstuff. If two closed tubs are placed one on top of another, the edge 14 of the base of one tub 1 on stands on the lower annular surface 25 of the upwardly opening annular groove 22 of the lid 2 of the other tub. The inner diameter d, of groove 22 is slightly smaller than the smallest inner diameter of D, of the edge 14, the difference between these two diameters being about 0.3 to 2.0 mm. The outer diameter of the upwardly opening annular groove 22 is large enough to make it impossible for edge 14 of the base of the upper tub to get tightly fixed in the upwardly opening annular groove 22 of the lower tub lid.The lowermost outer diameter of the base edge 14 being shown as D2, the outer diameter of d2 of the upwardly opening annular groove 22 suitably exceeds diameter D2 by 2 to 6 mm but not more than 10 mm. The depth t of annular groove 22 is 0.3 to 2.0 mm smaller than the height H of edge 14 and recessed base 15, so that the wall 13 does not touch the flat lid surface 23.
The lid surface 23 lies in approximately the same plane as the upper surface 26 of down wardly opening annular groove 21.
The tub body shown in the drawing has an annular rib 16, spaced from the beaded mouth edge 12 and formed by outward pressing from the frustoconical tub body 11.
The outer edge of the lower annular surface 25 presses into this bead 16. The result of this is that the annular surface 25 is given additional support, so that on compressing a stack of packages the annular surfaces 25 resist substantial deformation and thus the decorative material 5 need not be crushed by the lid surfaces 23.

A stackable container suitable for packaging foodstuff, comprising a frustoconical (as hereinbefore defined) tub having a recessed base with a folded-beaded periphery, and a beaded mouth edge to the tub, and provided with a lid of transparent material which overlaps the beaded mouth edge to the tub and which has an upwardly opening annular groove having a size and shape enabling it to receive the foldedbeaded periphery of the base of another container of similar form.
