Description

(54) FILTERING APPARATUS (71) We, WEBRON PRODUCTS LI MITED, a British Company, of Bacup Road, Rawtenstall, Rossendale, Lancashire, BB4 7JL, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to filtering apparatus.
In filtering apparatus of the kind which has one or more filter elements in the form of a tube or bag, through which material to be filtered is passed, it is common practice to provide a sealing ring around the periphery of each bag or tube.
An example of such an arrangement is disclosed in British Patent No. 1314143 and comprises an endless sealing ring of felt stitched to the end of a filter bag. The filter bag is located in an aperture in a partition wall comprised in the filter apparatus and the sealing ring is axially compressed against the partition wall in rder to produce a dust-tight seal.
According to the present invention a filtering apparatus is provided which comprises a filter bag or tube, an endless felt sealing ring around the periphery of the bag or tube, a resilient support for the sealing ring, said support being located radially inwardly of the sealing ring between said ring and the bag or tube whereby radial pressure can be applied to the sealing ring to produce a dust-tight seal between the sealing ring and the boundary of an aperture in a partition wall in which the filter bag or pad is located, said sealing ring being in direct contact with the said aperture boundary.
In a preferred embodiment of the inention the radially outer surface of the sealing ring is profiled and is adapted to seat in a complementary profiled internal boundary surface of the aperture in the partition wall.
The dimensions of the aperture and of the resilient support are chosen such that when the sealing ring is seated in the aperture radial pressure is applied thereto.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a diagrammatic section through a part of a filter apparatus illustrating sealing of a filter bag against a partition wall.
Referring to the drawing a filter bag 10 has an endless sealing ring of felt 12 provided around the exterior thereof adjacent the open end of the bag. The ring 12 is secured to the filter bag by stitching, as at 14. An endless ring 16 of spring steel is disposed between the sealing ring 12 and the bag 10. The ring 16 may be made of other materials such as hard rubber. The sealing ring 12 may be felted or needlefelted and may be made of heat stabilized fibres. The latter are advantageously used for high temperature operation.
As can be seen in the drawing the sealing ring 12 is not of rectangular cross section, but has a radially outwardly projecting flange 18. the flange 18 is received in the appropriately profiled rim of an aperture in a partition wall 22 through which the bag is disposed. Other configurations of sealing ring may be employed. For example the ring may be of rectangular, and in particular, square cross-section, the rim being given the appropriate corresponding shape. The desired profile of ring 12 can be obtained by using a hot melt process whereby the fibrous cross-section is circumferentially grooved by hot knife or welding iron application. A dust tight closure between the sealing ring and the rim is obtained by virtue of the radial pressure applied to the ring 12 by the spring ring 16. To achieve such radial pressure the dimensions of the ring 16 and the rim must be appropriately chosen.

Claims (5)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A filtering apparatus comprising a filter bag or tube, an endless felt sealing ring around the periphery of the bag or tube, a resilient support for the sealing ring, said support being located radially inwardly of the sealing ring between said ring and the bag or tube whereby radial pressure can be applied to the sealing ring to produce a dust-tight seal between the sealing ring and the boundary of an aperture in a partition wall in which the filter bag or tube is located, said sealing ring being in direct contact with said aperture boundary.
2. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the outer surface of the sealing ring is profiled and is adapted to seat in a complementary profiled internal boundary surface of the aperture.
3. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the outer surface of the sealing ring is profiled to form a flange, said flange being adapted to seat in a channel around the boundary of the aperture.
4. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the outer surface of the sealing ring is profiled to form a channel which is adapted to seat on the boundary of the aperture.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
