Description

(54) CHANNEL MEMBER AND BEAD (71) We, RED CIRCLE SIGNS LIMItED, a body corporate organised under the laws of Great Britain of 19 Andover Place, Maida Vale, London, NW6, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to channelsectioned members and beads for use in display signs.
Conventional display signs are made up of a plurality of metal extrusions which are connected together by screws to build up a display sign box.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a channel-sectioned member and bead therefore which simplify the assembly of a sign box and reduce the time required for assembly.
The present invention provides an assembly comprising a channel-sectioned member and bead for use in a display sign box, the channelsectioned member having at least one edge which has locating means for receiving a first portion of the bead in releasable and hingeable engagement therewith, support means spaced from said locating means for supporting a display panel, and engagement means for use in in fastening a second portion of the bead when a display panel is held against said support means and wherein the bead has a third, cooperating portion extending from the second portion and arranged, so that when the first portion is supported in the locating means, the third portion is held against the panel by fastening of the second portion to the engagement means.
By means of the present invention it is possible quickly to insert a display panel into a box made of channel-sectioned members and beads of the present invention by locating each outer edge of the display panel against said at least one edge of each channel-sectioned member, locating the first portion of each bead in its respective locating means, and then fastening the second portion with the engagement means.
Conveniently the engagement means comprises at least one screw threaded aperture or a ribbed (c.f. threaded) slot for receiving one or more screws disposed, in use of the member, through the/an appropriate aperture(s) in the second portion of the bead.
Most conveniently the engagement means comprises a generally U-shaped channel whose facing internal faces are continuously ribbed along at least a major portion of the length of the channel, to provide a thread to receive a screw.
In another embodiment, the present invention provides an assembly comprising a channel-sectioned member and bead for use in a display sign box, wherein the engagement means are interlocking means.
By means of the immediately hereinbefore described embodiment it is possible quickly to insert a display panel into a box made of channel-sectioned members and beads of the present invention by locating each outer edge of the display panel against said at least one edge of each channel-sectioned member, locating the first portion of each bead in its respective locating means, and then pressing in the retaining bead until its second portion interlocks with said at least one edge. It will also be appreciated that with the present invention it is possible very quickly and easily to change a display panel merely by pulling out the bead, replacing the display panel with a new one and then pushing the bead back into place.
Channel-sectioned members and beads of the present invention are now described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a transverse end section of part of a sign assembly comprising a channelsectioned member together with a bead and part of a display panel; Figure 2 is a transverse end section of a support member suitable for use with the device of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse end section of the bead of Figure 1; Figure 4 is an enlarged view of the end of the channel-sectioned member adjacent the bead as seen in Figure 1; Figure 5 is a view corresponding to that of Figure 1 of a second embodiment; Figure 6 is a view of the second embodiment, corresponding to that of Figure 4; and Figure 7 is a view of the second embodiment, corresponding to that of Figure 3.
In Figure 1 is shown a channel-sectioned member 1 interlocked with a bead 2 so as to retain a display panel 3. A longitudinal edge 4 of member 1 (which in other respects is generally of conventional structure) is provided with a generally U-shaped channel 5 connected along one corner 6 by a web 7 to the member 1 in proximity to said edge 4 with the arms 8, 9 of the channel 5 extending substantially parallel to the principal plane of member 1. A first arm 8 in proximity with the edge 4 of member 1 extends beyond the edge 4 and is provided at its end with a rib 11 disposed on a side 12 of arm 8 remote from edge 4. This rib acts as an engagement means for the bead 2. The other arm 9 extends slightly further than the first arm 8 and terminates in an inwardly directed flange 10 and provides support means for the panel 3.
Between said first arm 8 and said edge 4 a flange 31 extends outwardly from the connecting web 7 in a direction substantially parallel to said first arm 8 and slightly beyond said edge 4, whilst defining with the edge 4 a locating slot 32 therebetween. The slot 32 has a generally arcuate transverse cross-sectional profile and has an open end portion 33 defined by the surface of flange 31, and curves round towards edge 4 terminating in proximity thereto in a closed generally cuspidate closed end 34 (see Figure 4). The edge 4 is chamfered 35 at about 45O and an outer inwardly facing portion 36 thereof which constitutes one wall of the slot 32 is formed as a generally semi-cylindrical rib.
The bead 2 is generally U-shaped with a first arm 13 provided with an inwardly disposed rib 14 (see Figure 3) at its end 15 and a second arm 16 extending beyond first arm 13 and being displaced inwardly at its end 17. Said end 17 is formed with a generally semi-circular transverse profile which terminates in a generally cuspidate bead end portion 37 with a semi-cylindrical groove 38 facing outwardly though spaced from the plane of the outer face 39 of the arm 16 of the bead 2 and having a radius substantially similar to that of the semi-cylindrical rib 36 of the edge 4 of the channel-sectioned member 1.
The base 18 of bead 2 extends outwardly at 19 beyond first arm 13 and has an outer portion 20 thickened in the direction in which the arms 13, 16 extend.
In use of the channel-sectioned member 1 and bead 2 to hold a display panel 3, the panel 3 is placed against second arm 9 of member 1 with its outer edge 21 disposed between the arms 8 and 9 of member 1. The displaced end 17 of the second arm 16 of bead 2 is located in the slot 32 adjacent outer edge 4 of member 1 with the semicylindrical groove 38 of the former nesting the semi-cylindrical rib 36 of the latter so that the bead 2 can then be smoothly swung round about said semicylindrical rib 36, the cuspidate end portion 37 passing into the arcuate slot 32 until it nests in the closed cuspidate end 34 of the slot 32. At the same time the ribs 11 and 14 on the arms 8 and 13 on the member 1 and bead 2, respectively come into engagement with each other and as the bead 2 is pressed home said ribs 11, 14 rise up over each other and then 'snap' into an interlocking position with the base extension 19 of bead 2 abutting panel 3 and pressing it against arm 9 of member 1. The base extension 19 provides a bead portion for co-operating with the panel 3 to hold it against the support arm 9.
The panel 3 is shown as having on its rear face 40 a raised upper edge 41. This is provided, in a corner 42 between said raised edge 41 and the rear face 40 with a narrow slot 43 which is disposed in the plane of said rear face 40 and dimensioned for receiving the flange 10 of the other arm 9 of channel 5. This has the advantage that the panel 3 remains supported on the channel-sectioned member 1 when the bead 2 is removed. e.g. for the purpose of changing the panel, until the panel is then lifted off said flange 10. By this means accidental panel breakages can be significantly reduced.
Nevertheless it is, of course, quite feasible to use conventional sign panels, i.e. ones without a raised edge, in which case the rear face of the panel merely rests against said flange 10 and the panel is held in place by the bead 2.
For the purposes of facilitating removal of the bead 2, the outermost portion 44 of the base extension 19 thereof is chamfered 45 on the side thereof from which the first and second arms 13, 16 extend. In use of the bead 2 to locate a panel 3 there is then formed a narrow Vee-shaped groove 46 between the panel 3 and the chamfer 45 of said outermost portion 44 into which an appropriate tool (not shown) may be readily inserted for levering off the bead which is readily removed by rolling around the semi-cylindrical rib 36 at the outer edge 4 and then lifting it off.
Thus, in one embodiment, the present invention provides a display box assembly for holding a display panel in which the panel is held in position by a bead which is readily insertable into an assembled position in which it is securely held by a snap-fit interlock and from which it is readily removable, the specific construction illustrated above providing a particularly smooth assembly and disassembly action.
In further aspects the present invention provides a bead as described hereinbefore and the channel-sectioned member of the present invention in combination with such a bead, as well as a display box including said member and said bead, optionally with a display panel.
In the construction shown in figures 5 - 7, parts similar to those of the first embodiment have similar references to which have been added 100 e.g. 1 becomes 101 and 31 becomes 131.
In Figure 5 is shown a channel-sectioned member 101 interconnected with a bead 102 so as to retain a display panel 103. A longitudinal edge 104 of member 101 (which in other respects is generally of conventional structure) is provided with a generally L.shaped portion 105 connected along one comer 106 by a web 107 to the member 101 in proximity to said edge 104 with a free arm 109 of the portion 105 extending substantially parallel to the principal plane of member 101.
Between said arm 109 and said edge 104, a flange 131 extends outwardly from the connecting web 107 in a direction substantially parallel to said arm 109 and slightly beyond said edge 104, whilst defining with the edge 104 a slot 132 of the same shape as slot 32.
The flange 131 projecting from web 107 terminates approximately half way up one arm 150 of a generally U-shaped engagement channel 151 whose base 152 is generally parallel to the principal plane of the channel-section member 101. The opposing internal faces 153 of channel 151 are grooved along their length with screwthreading 154 such that a screw of corresponding thread (not shown) can be screwed into the channel anywhere along its length to maintain bead 102 in position.
The bead 102 (see Figure 7) is generally L- shaped and similar to bead 2 of Figure 1, but it does not have an arm 13. Instead, the arm 116 is provided on its outer side with a narrow groove 155 (and the arm is thickened at 180) for locating a drill bit for drilling a suitable aperture (not shown) through the arm, through which aperture a screw (not shown) may then be disposed for engaging the screwthreaded channel 151 and thereby fastening the bead 102 firmly in engagement with channel-section member 101. The base 118 ofbead 102 has an outer portion 120 thickened in the direction in which the arm 116 extends. Furthermore, a locating rib 181 is provided to locate the bead against the outermost arm of channel 151.
In use of the channel-sectioned member 101 and bead 102 to hold adisplaypanel 103,the panel 103 is placed against the support arm 109 of member 101 with its outer edge disposed between the arm 109 and the flange 131 of member 101. The displaced end 117 of the second arm 116 of bead 102 is located in the slot 132 as with the construction of Figure 1 so that the bead 102 can then be smoothly swung round about the semi-cylindrical rib 136 until the portion 137 nests in the closed cuspidate end 134 of the slot 132. Screws (not shown) may then be disposed through apertures (not shown) drilled in the arm 116 of bead 102 and screwthreadedly engaged with channel 151 so that the bead 102 is fastened to the channelsection member 101 with bead 102 abutting panel (not shown) and pressing it against arm 109 of member 101.
For the purposes of facilitating removal of the bead 102, the outermost portion 144 of the base 118 is chamfered at 145 as with the construction of Figure 1 so that an appropriate tool (not shown) may be readily inserted for levering off the bead 102 (if necessary) after the screws (not shown) have been removed, the bead being readily removed by rolling around the semi-cylindrical rib 136 at the outer edge 104 and then lifting it off.
A further feature in the second embodiment is the provision of partially open-sided generally circular cross-sectioned grooves 156 on an internal face 157 of member 101 for use in the fastening of end pieces in the construction of a sign panel by driving self-tapping screws (not shown) into said grooves 156.
Conveniently each of the bead and the member are aluminimum extrusions whilst the display panel is of a substantially rigid plastics material such as an acrylic plastic, for example, PERSPEX. (Registered Trade Mark).
