Description

(54) AN ALTERNATOR FOR CONNECTION TO A CYLINDER BLOCK AND HAVING AN INTEGRAL CONNECTING BRACKET (71) We, FABRICA ITALIANA MAGNETI MARELLI S.p.A., a Company incorporated under the laws of Italy, of Via Guastalla 2, Milano, Italy, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an improvement in or relating to alternators for connection to cylinder blocks by using a connecting bracket.
In known alternators of this type, the mounting bracket is a separate element from the alternator, having a surface for bearing on the cylinder block and a cradle surface for bearing the alternator which may be secured thereto by means of a metal belt.
Such a mounting system, i.e. one comprising a separate bracket, alternator and cylinder block, requires a number of parts rendering the assembly mechanically complex and costly.
Moreover, due to tolerances of the dimensions of the engaging surfaces of each element of the fastening system, accurate positioning of the alternator shaft cannot be obtained, this being particularly required when such a shaft is coupled to further parts.
According to the present invention there is provided an alternator for connection to a cylinder block, the alternator having a housing and connecting bracket means integral with the housing, the bracket means comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the cylinder block and integral with means securing it to the alternator housing, the securing means being integral with the housing and extending outwardly from the circumference thereof.
An alternator according to the invention is capable of avoiding the abovementioned disadvantages since it reduces the number of parts to be assembled. Thus more accurate assembling at lower cost is possible.
The invention is further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic front view of an alternator connected to the engine of a motor vehicle; and Figure 2 is a view of the alternator shown in Figure 1, taken in the direction of arrow F.
Referring to the figures of the accompanying drawings, reference numeral 1 designates a housing of an alternator, having a rectifier bridge 2 mounted thereon.
The housing 1 is integral with a bracket 5 for securing the alternator to the cylinder block 6 of an engine (not shown).
The bracket 5 comprises an extension 5a of the housing 1 extending outwardly from the circumference of the alternator and terminating with a rectangular connecting flange or plate 5b, the latter being provided with through holes 5c. The extension 5a of the housing 1 may suitably be hollow.
Fastening to cylinder block 6 is accomplished by means of screws 7 passing through said holes Sc and engaging in corresponding threaded holes provided in the cylinder block.
Reference numeral 4 designates a mounting means other than the bracket 5 and which comprises a closure gap. A stator 3 is also shown. Two lugs 8 may be additionally provided on bracket portion 5a for fastening the voltage regulator (not shown). These lugs are also integrally formed with support 1.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. An alternator for connection to a cylinder block, the alternator having a housing and connecting bracket means integral with the housing, the bracket means comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the cylinder block and integral with means securing it to the alternator housing, the securing means being integral with the housing and extending outwardly from the cir

1. An alternator for connection to a cylinder block, the alternator having a housing and connecting bracket means integral with the housing, the bracket means comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the cylinder block and integral with means securing it to the alternator housing, the securing means being integral with the housing and extending outwardly from the cir cumference thereof.
2. An alternator according to Claim 1 wherein the bracket has lugs integrally formed therewith for receiving fastening means of a voltage regulator.
3. An alternator according to Claim 1 or 2 further having a mounting means other than the bracket means.
4. An alternator according to any preceding claim wherein the securing means is hollow and the plate is provided with through holes for receiving screws for securing the bracket to a cylinder block.
5. An alternator as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
