Description

(54) ADJUSTABLE EASY CHAIR (71) We, STANZWERK PEITZ & BR< CO., a Kommanditgesellschaft organised under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, of Ruhrstrasse 35, 5802 Wetter, Ruhr 1, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to an adjustable easy chair.
Known easy chairs of which the seat and backrest are movable between a sitting position and a so-called lying position, and in which the backrest is at a steeper angle in the sitting position than in the lying position (in which the seat is also inclined to a greater extent towards the rear than in the sitting position), have the disadvantage that when the chair is moved out of the sitting position into the lying position the backrest swings out towards the rear, so that the centre of gravity is displaced thus making it necessary for the frame which supports the seat and backrest to project far to the rear in order to prevent the chair from tipping over when moved into the lying posi tion, which means that adjustable chairs of this kind have a relatively great depth occupy ing considerable space.
Furthermore, such chairs cannot be placed permanently with their backs resting against the wall, because when the chair is moved to its lying position it must first be moved away from the wall in order to provide room for the backrest to swing out to the rear.
The present invention aims to provide an adjustable easy chair of the kind described above which can also be of relatively small depth, while in addition when it is changed over from the sitting to the lying position it requires no additional space behind the chair, and its fittings can be manufactured and in stalled in a simple manner and at low cost.
According to the invention there is provided an adjustable easy chair comprising a seat and a backrest rigidly connected together to form a unit which can be moved between a sitting position in which the backrest is substantially upright and a lying position in which thc hackrest has swivelled into a reclining disposition, the said seat being supported on a frame to which it is articulated about horizontal axes by means of a pair of rear links, one on each side of the seat, and a pair of front links, one on each side of the seat, the front links being longer than the rear links, and the axes of articulation of the front and rear links on the frame being at substantially the same level and lower than the level of the corresponding axes of articulation of the respective links on the seat, the axes of articulation of the links being located so that in the sitting position the front and rear links are either vertical or slope backwardly in the upward direction from the vertical and swivel forwards about the lower axes of articulation when the unit is moved to its lying position.
Because of this arrangement, when the chair is changed over from the sitting position to the lying position both the inclination of the seat and that of the backrest are changed, as is desirable, while at the same time the body of the seat is displaced forwards so that despite the inclination of the backrest towards the rear no additional space is required behind the chair.
In addition, in an advantageous further development, at least one link on each side of the seat has an extension which extends beyond the axis of articulation on the seat and on which is articulated a forwardly directed rod whose front end portion acts in the style of a crank on an adjusting member, known per se, of a footrest provided under the front edge of the seat and thereby moves the footrest forwardly and upwardly when the unit is moved from the sitting to the lying position.
In this way the adjustable chair of the invention can also be equipped in an extremely simple manner with a known footrest which is moved out forwards when the chair is adjusted from the sitting position to the lying position.
In another embodiment of the invention, above the adjustable backrest there is provided a headrest which is fastened to the frame and against whose lower side the upper end of the backrest lies when the seat is in the sitting position. There is also preferably provided between the headrest and the adjustable backrest a strip of textile material or the like which joins the headrest and backrest together and which is drawn taut when the seat is swivelled forwards into the lying position.
This means that in the lying position the backrest is longer than in the sitting position, thus permitting lying in a more comfortable position than hitherto.
In this arrangement it. is advantageous for the headrest to extend over the entire width of the backrest.
Furthermore, in a preferred arrangement side pieces, fastened to the frame, extend from the seat - or from armrests if provided -- to the headrest in order to provide side protection for the backrest.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, embodiments in accordance therewith will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an adjustable easy chair in the sitting position, in longitudinal section, Figure 2 shows the same chair in the lying position.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a modified embodi ment in the sitting and lying positions respec tively, likewise in longitudinal section.
In the drawings, like reference numerals refer to like parts.
In the drawings the frame 1 is composed of armrests 2 and frame members 3 and 4 joining them together. On the frame 1 a seat body is mounted adjustably. The seat body consists of a seat 5 and a backrest 6, the seat and backrest being rigidly joined together. On both sides of the seat body are disposed two links 7 and 8.
The link 7 is articulated by means of a pin 9 on the frame 1 and by means of another pin 10 on a plate 11 fastened to the seat 5, while the link 8, whose length is more than 1i times that of the link 7, is pivotally connected by means of a pin 12 to the frame 1 and by means of a pin 13 to the seat 5.
The pins 9 and 12 and also the pin 13 can advantageously also be fastened on respective plates fastened on the frame 1 and seat 5.
On the link 7 is provided an extension 15 which projects beyond the pin 10 and on which is articulated a rod 16 which is forwardly directed and connected like a crank to a known scissors arrangement 17 carrying a footrest 18.
In the sitting position the links 7 and 8 are slightly inclined in the upward direction to wards the rear from the vertical, and the exten sion 15 of link 7 then bears against a stop 14 projecting from the plate 11.
If the seat body is now moved forwards in relation to the frame 1, for example by a person sitting in the chair gripping the armrests and pulling himself forwards, the links 7 and 8 pivot into the position shown in Figures 2 and 4, the extension 15 of the link 7 then bearing against a stop 19, while the footrest 18 necessarily swings out forwards and upwards. Movement of the seat body into the lying position can also be achieved by pulling the footrest 18 forward away from the frame of the chair.
The seat body and footrest 18 can be returned to their original positions by reversing the above-described operations.
In order to enable the chair of the invention also to be adjusted by a person sitting in the chair when no armrests 2 are provided, there may be fastened on the frame 1 at the side of the seat 5, preferably on both sides, a pulling element, for example a loop made of textile strapping, which is gripped by the person sitting in the chair in order to pull the seat body forwards.
In Figures 3 and 4 there is provided on the frame 1, above the backrest 6, a headrest 20 which is fastened to the frame and againsi whose lower side the upper side of the backrest lies approximately in Figure 3, that is to say in the sitting position. Between the headrest 20 and the backrest 6 is fastened a strip of textile material 21 which joins the headrest and backrest together and in the lying position of the chair (Figure 4) covers over the gap between the headrest 20 and the backrest 6.
In addition, the backrest 6 is screened at the sides by side pieces 22 fastened to the frame and extending from the armrests 2 to the headrest 20.
