Abstract
159,948. Crozier, W. H. Dec. 1, 1919. Hook fastenings.-A parachute for use on aircraft is connected by two cables, one over one side and one over the other side of the fuselage, to two links secured in automatic releasing means on the aircraft, the person using the parachute being connected to a member which is also secured in automatic releasing-means and provided with two hooks, one or the other of which automatically engages the corresponding link of the parachute as the person leaves the aircraft to one side or the other. The parachute is connected by cables 1, 2 to links 3, 4 secured inspring clips 6 - - 9 on a fitting bolted at 12 to the aircraft. Spring clips 13, 14 on the fitting secure a member 15 provided with two pivoted hooks 16, 17 which are normally retained in the position shown by springs 18. A link 19 connected to the person is pivoted to the member 15 and has a roller adapted to engage either of the hooks 16, 17 as the link 19 is pulled to one side or the other as the person leaves the aircraft, the hook ultimately being drawn into and held in engagement with a pin 5 on the adjacent link 3 or 4. The member 15 and appropriate link are then pulled out of their clips and finally the other link is released. The hooks 16, 17 have tailpieces 20, 21 so that when one hook is closed the other cannot be closed and when the load comes on the device the closed hook cannot open until the load is removed. Means may be provided to prevent removal of the member 15 until one orthe other of the hooks has been brought into engagement with its link. For this purpose a stop on the cable connected to the link 19 may engage the forked end of a normally vertical lever which is swung sideways into a position enabling the cable to be withdrawn as the appropriate hook is brought into engagement with the link 3 or 4. Alternatively, a plate anchored to the main fitting may have a flange concentric with a pivot of the link 19, a horn on the link engaging the flange which is sufficiently long to prevent withdrawal of the member 15 until a hook has engaged its link.
