Condensing and washing plant and processes; materials for purifying; condensers, atmospheric and like.-Coal, oil, or producer gas is purified by supplying it with glycerine, compressing it in two stages to a pressure of 300 pounds per square inch, and passing the mixture through a condenser maintained at about a temperature of 60‹ F. provided with baffles and a drain cock for the condensed' glycerine and impurities, and then through a separator or extractor which completes the removal of the glycerine &c. The gas is supplied from a pipe 2 to a cylinder 1, in which it is compressed by a piston 5 and passed to a second cylinder 3, in which the compression to about 300 pounds per square inch is completed by a piston 6. The pistons 5, 6 are carried by a rod 7 operated by a steam cylinder 9. Upon the rod 7 is mounted a cross-head 18 connected by a rod 16 to a valve sliding in a casing which controls the supply of glycerine from a tank 14 to holes 10, 11, in the cylinder 1, 3. The compressed gas and glycerine pass atthe high pressure to an horizontal condenser 20 provided with water or other cooling-tubes 21, and formed with baffles 22 to deflect the mixture which gives up part of its impurities to glycerine, which condenses and is drawn off by a trap 29. The mixture then passes at a temperature of about 60‹ F. through an extractor 24 fitted with further baffles 25 and a trap 26, the purification being thus completed.
