Description

(54) JOINTING ASSEMBLIES (71) We, BROWNSON SERVICE EQUIPMENT LIMITED, a British Com- pany, of 28-30, Hythe Road, Willesden, London. NW10 6RX, do hereby declare this invention, for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a jointing assembly and in particular to a jointing assembly for use in the construction of prefabricated units.
According to the present invention, a jointing assembly comprises a first tubular member of at least partially closed rectangular cross section apart from a longitudinal slit opening along one corner edge and interengaged with a second like member such that the four sides of one member contact with the four sides of the other member and at least one bracing member including a strip lying along the diagonal between one corner of said first member and the opposite corner of said second member.
The jointing assembly, according to the present invention, finds particular application for jointing panels of metal or plastics forming parts of a prefabricated construction e.g.. a kitchen cabinet or counter unit, wherein the tubular members are formed integrally with the panels along the edges to be jointed. The assembly may be used to provide a corner construction or to join two or more panels to form an enlarged planar unit.
The present invention is described in more detail with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification in which; Fissure 1 shows a plan view of a jointing assembly joining two panels to form a planar unit and Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a corner unit construction.
Referring to Figure 1, two panels (1, 2) fabricated of, for example, stainless steel, and forming part of a counter unit are provided at their edges with tubular members (3, 4) of rectangular cross section and formed integrally of the panel sheets. The tubular members are provided with longitudinal slits (5). The slits may be of varying width and may, for example, extend to more than half the width of the side (6) of the tubular member thus providing for an economy of an expensive material of construction, such as stainless steel, without weakening the joint.
The tubular members (3, 4) interengage through the longitudinal slits (5). The joint is braced and the members prevented from disengagement by means of a brace member in the form of an elongated strip (7) which may be bent along its longitudinal edges to provide additional rigidity. The strip (7) is forced into the cavity surrounded by the interlocked members and wedges diagonally between opposite corners of the members, thus forcing the sides of each member into close contact with the sides of the other member thus holding the joint firm. To provide additional rigidity, the brace member may be in the form of a cross piece (9) as shown in Figure 2 so as to wedge between all four corners of the cavity surrounded by the interengaged tubular members.
Referring to Figure 2, this illustrates a similar joint assembly to that of Figure 1 used in a corner unit construction with a cross piece bracing member. As will be seen, in order to provide such a corner unit the tubular member formed on one of the panels (2) is formed on an extended strip (10) formed at right angles to the main plane of the panel.
The joint assembly described is simple in construction and, apart from the bracing member, needs no additional separate parts. Moreover, no tools are required for forming the assembly. Thus, prefabricated units of various types and designs may incorporate the jointing assembly without significant increase in bulk or weight of the packaged kit. Such kits therefore provide for minimum handling problems when in transit and minimum freight charges.
Moreover, in view of the simple nature of the jointing assembly, construction of the prefabricated unit incorporating such assembly does not require the need of skilled labour.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A jointing assembly comprising a first tubular member of at least partially closed rectangular cross section apart from a longitudinal slit opening along one corner edge and interengaged with a second like member such that the four sides of one member contact with the four sides of the other member and at least one bracing member including a strip lying along the diagonal between one corner of said first member and the opposite corner of said second member.
2. A jointing assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the tubular members are formed along the edges of flat panels.
3. A jointing assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 formed from metal or plastics material.
4. A jointing assembly, as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the bracing member is a X-shaped cross section and extends along opposed diagonals of said tubular members.
5. A jointing assembly as claimed in Claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
6. Prefabricated constructions jointed by means of the jointing assembly as claimed in anyone of Claims 1 to 5.
