Description
(54) AN ARTICLE FOR ADAPTING A CONVENTIONAL
SINK OR BASIN FOR USE AS A BACK-WASH BASIN
(71) I, DENIS CORNELIUS
POUNDS, a British subject, of 22 The
Ridgeway, Harold Wood, Essex, RM3
ODT, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement::
According to the present invention, there is provided an article which serves to adapt a conventional sink or basin for use as a back-wash basin, comprising engaging means arranged to engage the front wall of said conventional sink or basin, a part arranged to be located at the top of the front wall of said conventional sink or basin, first and second wings which extend away from said part in such a manner that, with said part located at said top, said wings extend forwardly and upwardly, and a recess between said wings and bounded thereby for receiving a client's neck.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a front view of an article adapting a conventional kitchen sink for use as a back-wash basin,
Figure 2 shows the article in use by a hairdresser's client,
Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the article,
Figure 4 shows an end elevation of the article,
Figure 5 shows a front perspective view of a modified version of the article, and
Figure 6 shows a rear perspective view of the modified version.
Referring to Figure 1, there is seen a conventional kitchen sink 1 over the front wall of which is clipped an article 2 which adapts the sink 1 for use as a back-wash basin.
Referring particularly to Figures3 and 4, it can be seen that the article 2, which is moulded in one piece of resilient thermoplastics, consists basically of an inverted channel 3, 4 and wings 5. The channel 3, 4 consists of a base part 4 for resting on the top of the front wall of the sink, and two plate-form depending parts 3 which closely embrace the front wall from above. The parts 3 are sufficiently resiliently displaceable relative to each other and are sufficiently spaced apart in their free or unstressed condition to be able to grasp a wide range of thicknesses of sink front wall. The wings 5 extend from the base part 4 in such a manner that, with thearticle clipped over the front wall of the sink, the wings extend forwardly and upwardly at an angle of about 30C to the horizontal. The uppermost surfaces of the wings 5 have respective ridges 6 extending along their laterally outer edges and continuing down the laterally outer edges of the rear depending part 3. The wings 5 bound therebetween a recess 7 for receiving the neck of a client. The uppermost surfaces of the wings 5 have a ridge 8 extending along their laterally inner edges and bounding the recess 7 and shaped to bear comfortably against the client's neck.
To aid gripping of the front wall and also prevent scratching of the front face of the sink unit, thefront depending part 3 is provided at the inside of its bottom edge with a rubber buffer 10.
Figure 2 shows a client 9 lying back against the front depending part 3 with her neck resting on the ridge 8 and with her hair hanging down into the basin 1. The wings 5 avoid splashing of the shoulders and carry splashed water into the basin 1. Their ridges 6 and 8 prevent water from flowing over the lateral edges of the wings.
In the modified version shown in Figures 5 and 6, the rear depending part 3 narrows downwardly to an apex so as to be able to fit more readily in various shapes and sizes of sinks and basins. The front depending part 3 is replaced by two plate-form front depending parts 3' integrally connected by reinforcing webs 11 to the respective wings 5. The parts 3' are spaced apart along the base part 4, the rear depending part 3 being situated oPposite the gap between the parts 3'.
Formed in one lateral edge of the front depending part 3 is a notch 12 for retaining a water hose connected to a shampoo shower head.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. An article which serves to adapt a conventional sink or basin for use as a back-wash basin, comprising engaging means arranged to engage the front wall of said conventional sink or basin, a part arranged to be located at the top of the front wall of said conventional sink or basin, first and second wings which extend away from said part in such a manner that, with said part located at said top, said wings extend forwardly and upwardly, and a recess between said wings and bounded thereby for receiving a client's neck.
2. An article as claimed in claim 1, wherein said wings extend from said part in such a manner that, with said part located at said top and said means engaging said front wall, said wings extend forwardly and upwardly at an angle of about 30C to the horizontal.
3. An article as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the uppermost surfaces of the respective wings have respective ridges extending along their laterally outer edges.
4. An article as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the uppermost surfaces or the respective wings have a ridge extending along their laterally inner edges and bounding said recess.
5. An article as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said engaging means comprises first and second depending parts for embracing said front wall from above.
6. An article as claimed in claim 5, wherein the first depending part is resiliently displaceable towards and away from the second depending part for adjusting to the thickness of said front wall.
7. An article as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein said engaging means further comprises a third depending part spaced along the first-mentioned part from the second depending part for extending down the same side of said front wall as the second depending part, the first depending part being located opposite the gap between thesecond and third depending parts.
8. An article as claimed in claim 5, 6 or 7, wherein each depending part is plateform for placing face-to-face with said front wall.
9. An article as claimed in any preceding claim, and formed in one piece.
10. An article as claimed in any preceding claim and formed of thermoplastics.
11. An article for adapting a conventional sink or basin for use as a back-wash basin, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
