Description
(54) CLEARANCE SETTER
(71) I, PHILIP GRENVILLE HUNT, a
British subject, of 1 Medlicott Drive, Ladygrove
Farm, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to a device suitable for setting clearance, for example clearance between a door and a surface under the door while the door is being hung.
It is known that it is a tricky and time consuming problem to maintain between a door and a surface under the door a clearance while the door is being hung. It has now been found that said problem can be overcome or reduced by setting clearance with a device according to the present invention.
According to the present invention, there is provided a device suitable for setting clearance, comprising an elongate body having first and second portions thereof, said first portion having a first hexagonal cross section of said body, said first hexagonal cross section comprising four adjacent faces of said first portion, each of these faces lying in corresponding ones of respective planes, said second portion being a prolongation from said first portion and having a second hexagonal cross section of said body, said second hexagonal cross section being smaller in hexagonal size than first hexagonal cross section, said second hexagonal cross section comprising four adjacent faces of said second portion, each of these faces respectively lying in corresponding ones of said planes, opposite faces of each of said hexagonal portions being parallel with respect to each other.
For the purpose of setting clearance between a door and a surface under the door while the door is being hung, said cross sections are appropriate in size to said device being able to set that clearance.
The said body has a stable equilibrium. Preferably, said body is an integral body. Said body can be made of a hard wood, or of a light alloy, or of plastics material.
One embodiment of a said device of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of that embodiment;
Figure 2 is a view looking along the direction of arrow A shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a view looking along the direction of arrow B shown in Figure 1.
In Figure 1, a clearance setter device is an elongate body 1 having a first portion 2 and a second portion 3 that is a prolongation from the first portion 2.
The first portion 2 has a first hexagonal cross section of the body 1. This cross section is constituted by faces A1, B1, Cl, A2, B2, C2 each of which lie in corresponding ones of respective planes. These faces include four adjacent faces Al, B1, Cl, C2.
The second portion 3 has a second hexagonal cross section of the body 1. This cross section is smaller in hexagonal size that said first hexagonal cross section. The second hexagonal cross section is constituted by faces A3,B5, , , B4, C4 each of which lie in corresponding ones of respective planes. These faces include four adjacent faces A3, B3, A4, C4. Face A3 iS a prolongation in the plane of face Al and has the same width as face Awl . B3 iS a prolongation in the plane of face B1 but has a reduced width compared with the width of face B1. Face C3 is a prolongation but is not in the plane of any said face of the first portion 2.Face A4 iS a prolongation but is not in the plane of any said face of the first portion 2. Face B4 iS a prolongation in the plane of Face B2 but has a reduced width compared with the width compared with the width of face B2. Face C4 iS a prolongation in the plane of face C2 and has the same width as face C2 The clearance setter device has the following distances (i.e. clearance dimensions) between opposite faces: Al, A2 = 1 inch Bl,B2 =3/4inch Cl, C2 = 7/8 inch
A3,A4 = 5/8 inch
B3,B4 = 7/8 inch C3, C4 = 1/2 inch.
These values enable the clearance setter device to have a stable equilibrium. It will be appreciated that the clearance setter device has a maximum of 5 different said clearance dimensions. The following illustrates how this clearance setter may be used to provide a top clearance of 1/8 inch and a bottom clearance of 1/2 inch between a door and its frame.
If the door to be hung is initially the same size as the internal vertical dimension of the frame, 5/8 inch can be cut from the bottom of the door, and then the cut back door is placed onto a pair of the clearance setter devices, using clearance dimension C3, C4 to provide a clearance of 1/2 inch at the bottom of the door. Afterwards, the door is screwed into place within the frame.
Should the door have dimensions less than the internal dimension of the frame but more than the required size (which is the case with a door already hanging in place), measurement can be taken from the inside of the top of the frame to the bottom of the door, and measurement be taken of the actual vertical internal dimension of the frame. The latter measurement is subtracted from the former measurement, and knowing the bottom clearance required for the door, the door can then be cut back to give that clearance. The cut back door is placed onto a pair of the clearance setter devices, using a clearance dimension of required size. The door can be manoeuvred on the clearance setter devices and screwed to the frame.
The clearance setter device shown in the drawings is compact and handy to use. It can be made of a hard wood, or a light alloy, or plastics material.
