Description

(54) FIXING MEANS FOR HOLLOW ELONGATE MEMBERS (71) We, MONARCH ALUMINIUM LIMITED, a British Company, of Kingsditch Lane, Cheltenham, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to fixing means for hollow elongate members and has particular application to the provision of a fixture in the end of a hollow elongate member.
According to the invention, there is provided a fixture in an end of a hollow elongate member of uniform cross-section, comprising a fixing block of cross-section such that it is a sliding fit within the elongate member to which it is to be applied, and at least one fixing screw having a head whose diameter is less than that of its shank inserted in a respective tapped hole in the fixing block and extending generally perpendicularly to the axis of the block, the depth of the or each hole being such that when the screw is fully inserted in the hole, no part of the screw projects from the hole so that the screw does not interfere with sliding movement of the block within the elongate member, whereas, when the screw is partially inserted in the hole with the head of the screw projecting from the hole into an aligned hole in a side wall of the elongate member and the shoulder between the head and the shank abutting against the side wall, the block is firmly secured within the elongate member.
Thus, initially the fixing block is inserted in the elongate member with the or each screw fully inserted into the corresponding hole in the fixing block until the or each screw is brought into alignment with its corresponding hole in the elongate member.
The or each screw is then unscrewed from the fixing block to such an extent that it projects into the corresponding hole in the elongate member and prevents further relative movement between the fixing block and the elongate member.
The invention also provides the combination of such means for providing a fixture and a hollow elongate member of uniform cross-section within which the fixing block is firmly secured by the fixing screw(s), and a door incorporating such a combination.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a transverse cross-sectional view of ajoint between two hollow elongate members incorporating means for providing a fixture in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a cross-section view taken on the line II--II in Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken onthe line III--III in Figure 1.
The drawings show the invention applied to the construction of a glazed aluminiumframed door, the fixing means being used to connect a rail 10 of the door to a stile 12.
The rail 10 and the stile 12 are formed from box-section aluminium extrusions, the rail 10 having two channels 14 and 16, and the stile 12 having a single channel 18 for the reception of either individual panes of glass or sealed double-glazing units.
A fixing block 20 in accordance with the invention, having a cross-section of the same shape and slightly smaller dimensions than the interior cross-section of the rail 10, is inserted into the latter. The block 20 has two transversely extending tapped blind holes 22 and 24 extending therein from opposite sides thereof and each containing a respective screw 26 and 28. The heads of the screws 26 and 28 are of smaller diameters than the shanks thereof and, when in the position shown in the drawing, engage in correspondingly sized holes in the walls of the box section forming the rail 10, the diameter of such holes being too small for the shanks of the screws 26 and 28 to pass therethrough. The depth of the holes 22 and 24 are such that, when the screws 26 and 28 are fully screwed therein, the fixing block 20 can freely slide within the rail 10.
In order to secure the stile 12 to the fixing block 20, the latter is provided with a tapped hole 30 extending therethrough parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rail 10. A set screw 32 projects through a hole 34 in the adjacent wall of the stile 12 into engagement with the hole 30. A larger hole 36 of sufficient diameter to permit the head of the screw 32 to pass therethrough, is provided in the opposite wall of the stile 12 in alignment with hole 34 to permit insertion of the set screw 32 and of a tool whereby the screw 32 may be tightened.
During construction of a door using fixing means in accordance with the invention, the glass is inserted as the door is assembled.
With this arrangement, it is impossible for an intruder to remove a pane of glass from the door when it is closed because the heads of the screws 32 are then concealed by the door frame. The heads of the fixing screws 26 and 28 are either covered by the edges of the glass or, in the case of the top and bottom rails, concealed by the top of the door frame or the threshold respectively.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. Means for providing a fixture in an end of a hollow elongate member of uniform cross-section, comprising a fixing block of cross-section such that it is a sliding fit within the elongate member to which it is to be applied, and at least one fixing screw having a head whose diameter is less than that of its shank inserted in a respective tapped hole in the fixing block and extending generally perpendicularly to the axis of the block, the depth of the or each hole being such that when the screw is fully inserted in the hole, no part of the screw projects from the hole so that the screw does not interfere with sliding movement of the block within the elongate member, whereas, when the screw is partially inserted in the hole with the head of the screw projecting from the hole into an aligned hole in a side wall of the elongate member and the shoulder between the head and the shank abutting against the side wall, the block is firmly secured within the elongate member.
2. Means for providing a fixture according to claim I, wherein the fixing block is provided with a plurality of fixing screws symmetrically disposed with respect to the axis of sliding of the block.
3. Means for providing a fixture according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the fixing block is shaped to abut against the inner walls of the elongate member so as to prevent- relative angular movement therebetween.
4. Means for providing a fixture according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixing block has at least one tapped hole extending parallel to the axis of sliding of the block.
5. Means for providing a fixture substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. In combination, means for providing a fixture according to any preceding claim and a hollow elongate member of uniform cross-section within which the fixing block is firmly secured by the fixing screw(s).
7. A door incorporating a combination according to claim 6, wherein the elongate member is a rail of the door and the means for providing a fixture is used to connect together said rail and a stile of the door.
