According to the invention there is pro vided a label having a firs band of adhesive along one edge of one face of the label, a first market and/or weakened tear line extending across the label adjacent and palallel to the band of adhesive at the side or the band remote from said edge, and parallel to he band of adhesive extending across the other face of the label which second band is spaced along the label from an extends parallel to the first band and first tear line, a second marked and/or weakened tear line extending across the label adjacent and parallel to the second band of adhesive at the side of the second band remote from the first band, the label being doubled along a fold line made across the label adjacent the second band of adhesive at the side opposite the second tear line in such a manner that the two bands of adhesive face in the same direction and the label having a portion extending beyond the second band which portion is longer than the distance between the first and second bands and is folded so as not to cover the first band of adhesive.
In use the label is attached by the two adhesive bands to the article. The saide part of the label beyond the second tear, which part may varry instructions or other infor mation, can then be detached by tearing the label along the first and second tear lines in that order.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which Figure 1 and 2 respectively illustrate a label according to the invention before and after folding for attachment to an article.
Reffering to FIgure 1 the label shown is made from paper and has on its underface a first band of adhesive 10 extending along one edge of the label, and a weakened tear line 11 is formed close to one side of the band. A second band 12 of adhesive spaced away from the first band but parallel thereto is provided on the upper face of the label and is flanked on opposite sides by a fold line 13 and a second weakened tear line 14, the latter being at the side of band 12 remote from band 10. The remaining right hand end portion 15 of the label is crossed by parallel fold lines 16. Either or both of the tear lines bay additionally be indicated by a broken printed line To prepare the label for attachment to an article, the right hand portion of the label is doubled under about fold line 13, and the right hand end portion 15 is folded in concertina fashion along fold lines 16 as shown in Figure 2. The spacing of fold lines 16 is such that no part of portion 15 now underlies the adhesive band 10. Both bands of adhesive are now on the underside of the label and are ready for securing to the article.
Printed instructions or other information about the article is provided on the portion 15 of the label whilst instructions to tear the label along the tear lines to gain access to the information are printed on the exposed face of the label between the fold line 13 and the tear line 11. The instructions are detached by tearing the label along the tear lines 11 and 14 in that order. Printed lines may be used, to indicate where the label should be torn, instead of the weakened lines formed by intermittent slitting, but the weakened lines are greatly preferred.
