Circulating or passing fluids through materials.-In apparatus for dyeing loose or spun fibres, woven fabrics, garments, &c., in which a number of dyeing-compartments communicate with a dye-reservoir and in which means are provided for forcing the liquor from the dye reservoir and returning it at will, swivel valve - members arranged between the reservoir and dye compartments are governed by stop-members to control the direction in which the liquor passes through the dyeing compartments irrespective of whether the liquor is leaving the reservoir or returning thereto. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus is divided by partitions a, b into a central liquor-reservoir g and two compartments c, d, each provided with a false bottom f. Swivel valve-members i, i<1>, carried by brackets, loose on shafts l, are arranged between the reservoir and the compartments, and are controlled by angularly disposed stopmembers p, p<1>, fast on the shafts l, which carry levers q, q<1> connected to a weighted link r. With the valves in the position shown, liquor forced from the reservoir passes into the compartment d, overflows into the compartment c, and, upon reduction of the pressure in the reservoir, returns to the reservoir past the valve i. The direction of flow can be reversed by turning the stop-members p, p', the weighted link r causing them to remain in the desired position. In a modification, the dyeing-vat comprises a reservoir g, Fig. 6, and a single adjacent compartment provided with a cage spaced from the bottom and two opposite sides of the compartment. End and central swivelvalves w, x are arranged to communicate between the bottom of the reservoir and the spaces between the cage and the bottom of the vat and between the cage and the sides of the vat respectively. The valves are loosely mounted on pins and are free to turn in a direction determined by stops z<1>, z<2> amounted on a hand controlled sliding shaft 2 and cooperating with extensions y on the valves.
