Abstract

The roll-up closing body consists of a flexible, continuous plastic sheet (1) with a metal layer (2) adhering on one side. The layer thickness is considerably smaller than the sheet thickness, i.e. the thickness ratio is 1:5 to 1:15. Cutouts in the metal layer (2) form light or observation windows in the light-permeable plastic sheet. This sealing body can be used in roller gates, roller doors or roller blinds, where small winding diameters are required. <IMAGE>

(54) A CLOSURE MEMBER (71) I, KURT ALTEN, of 14 Ringstrasse, D-3015 Wennigsen, Federal Republic of Germany; a German national do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a closure member in the form of a roller gate, door, shutter or blind, the closure device being of the type which can be raised by being wound up into a roll, and lowered by being unwound from the roll.
The present invention seeks to provide a closure member which is smooth and continuous and has considerable strength, but which can be rolled up into a cylindrical shape having a relatively small diameter compared with prior art devices.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a closure member in the form of a roller gate, door, shutter or blind, which member is capable of being raised by winding into a roll and lowered by unwinding from the roll or down, the member comprising a pliable, plastics material, continuous base members having two major surfaces located opposite one another, a metal sheet or coating being fixedly connected to or formed on only one of the major surfaces of the base member the thickness of the metallic sheet coating being substantially less than that of the base member, the ratio of the thickness of the sheet or coating to that of the base member within the range of from 1 : 5 to 1 : 15 the base member having a thickness of between 4 and 8 mm and the sheet or coating having a thickness of between 0.4 and 0.8 mm.
It is possible to apply the metal in the form of a coating by spraying it onto the sheet or, if it is in the form of a sheet, by applying the sheet to the non-metallic base member. By providing the sheet or coating on only one of the major surfaces of the non-metallic base member, the closure member is pliable and can therefore be wound up into a tight, small diameter, roll.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary section through a portion of a closure member for a closure device in the form of a roller gate, and Figure 2 is a front elevational view of a further portion of the closure member shown in Figure 1.
A closure member in accordance with the present invention is in the form of a roller gate, door, shutter or blind, in all of which the closure member is used to cover an aperture in a building or wall. The closure member is guided along its lateral edges and normally is wound up to uncover the aperture and wound down to cover the aperture. In such a case, a winding arrangement is usually disposed above the aperture.
The closure member of the present invention comprises a base member 1 formed of transparent, pliable polyvinyl chloride having a wall thickness a of between 4 and 8 mm. A metal sheet 2 having a thickness b is adhesively secured to only one face of the base member 1 The sheet 2 has a thickness b of between 0.4 and 0.8 mm so that the ratio of the thickness a: b is of the order of 10:1. The sheet 2 is made of aluminium and is therefore flexible but capable of withstanding changes in temperature.
If it is desired to permit light to pass through the closure member, for example, to permit observations to be made through the member, the metal sheet or coating may be omitted in desired regions of the base member 1. Such regions thus form windows 3 which may be of any desired shape. The metal sheet or coating may also be provided with markings in the form of decorations or patterns.

The present invention seeks to provide a closure member which is smooth and continuous and has considerable strength, but which can be rolled up into a cylindrical shape having a relatively small diameter compared with prior art devices. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a closure member in the form of a roller gate, door, shutter or blind, which member is capable of being raised by winding into a roll and lowered by unwinding from the roll or down, the member comprising a pliable, plastics material, continuous base members having two major surfaces located opposite one another, a metal sheet or coating being fixedly connected to or formed on only one of the major surfaces of the base member the thickness of the metallic sheet coating being substantially less than that of the base member, the ratio of the thickness of the sheet or coating to that of the base member within the range of from 1 : 5 to 1 : 15 the base member having a thickness of between 4 and 8 mm and the sheet or coating having a thickness of between 0.4 and 0.8 mm. It is possible to apply the metal in the form of a coating by spraying it onto the sheet or, if it is in the form of a sheet, by applying the sheet to the non-metallic base member. By providing the sheet or coating on only one of the major surfaces of the non-metallic base member, the closure member is pliable and can therefore be wound up into a tight, small diameter, roll. The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary section through a portion of a closure member for a closure device in the form of a roller gate, and Figure 2 is a front elevational view of a further portion of the closure member shown in Figure 1. A closure member in accordance with the present invention is in the form of a roller gate, door, shutter or blind, in all of which the closure member is used to cover an aperture in a building or wall. The closure member is guided along its lateral edges and normally is wound up to uncover the aperture and wound down to cover the aperture. In such a case, a winding arrangement is usually disposed above the aperture. The closure member of the present invention comprises a base member 1 formed of transparent, pliable polyvinyl chloride having a wall thickness a of between 4 and 8 mm. A metal sheet 2 having a thickness b is adhesively secured to only one face of the base member 1 The sheet 2 has a thickness b of between 0.4 and 0.8 mm so that the ratio of the thickness a: b is of the order of 10:1. The sheet 2 is made of aluminium and is therefore flexible but capable of withstanding changes in temperature. If it is desired to permit light to pass through the closure member, for example, to permit observations to be made through the member, the metal sheet or coating may be omitted in desired regions of the base member 1. Such regions thus form windows 3 which may be of any desired shape. The metal sheet or coating may also be provided with markings in the form of decorations or patterns. WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A closure member in the form of a roller gate, door, shutter or blind, which member is capable of being raised by winding into a roll and of being lowered by unwinding the roll, the member comprising a pliable, plastics material, continuous base member having two major surfaces located opposite one another, a metal sheet being fixedly connected on only one of the major surfaces of the base member, the thickness of the metallic sheet or coating being substantially less than that of the base member, the ratio of the thickness of the sheet or coating to that of the base member lying within the range of from 1:5 to 1:15, the base member having a thickness of between 4 and 8 mm and the sheet or coating having a thickness of between 0.4 and 0.8 mm.
2. A closure member as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base member is translucent or transparent.
3. A closure member as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the base member is made of pliable polyvinyl chloride.
4. A closure member as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the ratio of the thickness of the sheet or coating to that of the base member is substantially 1:10.
5. A closure member as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the sheet or coating is absent from one or more regions of the base members, the region or regions in which the sheet or coating is absent constituting a viewing window or windows.
6. A closure member as claimed in claim 1 wherein the metal constituting the sheet or coating is of aluminium.
7. A closure member as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the metal sheet or coating, in use, forms the exterior facing surface of the closure member.
