Abstract
159,351. Boulton & Paul, Ltd., and North, J. D. Dec. 8, 1919. Cars and cabins; framework. - Transverse frames of fuselages, nacelles, or bcdies of aircraft are each composed of two sheet-metal plates 1 shaped to conform with the cross-section of the fuselage and rigidly spaced apart by short lengths of tube, tubular rivets, or the like 4, the plates having their edges turned outwards to form flanges 2, to which the covering skin of the fuselage is fixed. In one method of spacing the plates apart there are employed short lengths of tube 4 through each of which passes another tube which has its ends riveted outside the plates. In an alternative method, a single tube has flanges bearing upon the inner sides of the plates 1. Holes 8 are provided for tubular longerons 9, which are carried in sleeves 11 fixed to stiffening-plates 10. The sleeves are formed with ears 12 for the attachment of bracing-wires. The longerons, if formed of bent sheet metal, may be fixed by rivets or other means to the outer flanges of the bulkheads. Spars or other members may be connected so that the two plates 1 are loaded equally by fixing them between the plates 10 or other strengthening- plates. One or more transverse frames may be constructed with members outstanding to facilitate the attachment of fin ribs or tail planes.
