Abstract

159,326. Backhouse, J., and Samuelson, E. Nov. 27,1919. Pneumatic separating; reciprocating sieves; sieves with compound or variable motion.-A machine for aspirating, purifying, grading, and separating whole or broken grains comprises a centrifugal pneumatic separator in combination with a rotating or reciprocating sifter to separate the light and heavy products. The separator is of the kind employing a fan 1 concentric with a feed-spreader 2 rotating in a drum 4. At the top of the drum is placed an air-regulator consisting of a number of overlapping plates 5 which can be moved to and from the centre by a lever 6 to vary the size of the opening, somewhat in the manner of the iris diaphragm used in photography. The light material thrown out by the fan falls into a collector 9 and the heavy material from the drum 4 falls into a collector 11. The sifter is placed beneath the collectors and is divided into two compartments for the light and heavy material respectively. Each compartment is fitted with any desired number of sieves 12<a>, 13, 14, to which the material is led by plates 10, 12, provided with carriers placed beneath the collectors.
