Description
(54) APPARATUS FOR UTILISING WAVE OR TIDAL MOVEMENT
(71) I, MICHAEL VICTOR PORTELLI, a British subject, of 49 Queen Victoria
Street, London EC4 4HE, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to apparatus for utilising wave or tidal movement to generate hydraulic power.
According to the invention, there is provided apparatus for utilising wave or tidal movement to generate hydraulic power, said apparatus comprising a float member movably secured to ground which is covered for at least a part of every day by tidal water, a ram fixed to the float member, a chamber in which the ram is movably mounted, said chamber having an inlet to permit the ingress of tidal water and an outlet to permit the egress of water contained in said chamber, and a non-return valve arranged to prevent water expressed from said chamber from re-entering the chamber through said outlet, the chamber being formed by a series of telescopically arranged tubular sections, one end section being anchored to the said ground and the other end section being movably secured to the base of the float member and surrounding at least part of the ram.
The float member preferably comprises a ballasted tank or vessel guided between pillars anchored in the said ground. The tank or vessel may be provided with rollers which are guided in guideways provided on the pillars.
The ram is preferably secured to the base of the float member. The inlet to the chamber may comprise at least one hole in the side wall of the said other end section and the outlet from the chamber may comprise a pipeline leading from the said one end section, the non-return valve being located in this pipeline.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates, diagrammatically, one embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the apparatus comprises a float member in the form of a floating ballasted tank or vessel 1 which is substantially square or rectangular in plan view and which is provided at each corner with a series of lugs 2 on which are mounted rollers 3. The rollers 3 are located in guideways 4 formed in substantially vertical pillars 5 which are provided at each of the corners of the tank 1 and which are anchored in the bed 10 of the sea or other tidal water such as a river estuary. This arrangement permits the tank to fall or rise with the fall or rise of the tide and to be subjected to the wave motion of the tidal water since the rollers 3 are free to run along the guideways 4.
Fixed to a reinforcement plate 6 on the base of the tank 1 is a ram 7 and a tubular member 8 having a radially inwardly directed flange 9 spaced from the ram 7.
Located between the ram 7 and flange 9 is a tube 11 having radially outwardly directed flanges 12 and 13 at each end. The flange 12 is arranged to be engageable by the flange 9 and the flange 13 is engageable by a radially inwardly directed flange 16 provided at one end of a further tube 15. The tube 11 is further provided with a series of holes 14 intermediate its ends. The tube 15 is provided at its other end with a radially outwardly directed flange 17 which is engageable by a radially inwardly directed flange 18 provided at one end of a tube 19.
The other end of the tube 19 is provided with a radially outwardly directed flange 20 which is in turn engageable with a radially inwardly directed flange 21 provided on the upper end of a tubular member 22. The lower end of the tubular member 22 is secured to a plate 23 which is anchored to the bed 10.
The tubes 15 and 19 and the tubular member 22 form a telescopic chamber the height of which is determined by the tank 1 in a manner which is hereinafter' described.
The holes 14 in the tube 11 constitute an inlet to the chamber and an outlet is formed by an outlet pipe 24 leading from adjacent the lower end of the tubular member 22. A non-return valve 25 is connected to the outlet pipe 24 and a further pipe 26 leads from the outlet of valve 25 to a shore installation (not shown).
When subjected to an incoming tide or wave, the tank 1 rises with respect to the pillars 5 and the tubes 11, 15 and 19 are entrained by the respective co-operating flanges 9 and 12, 13 and 16, and 17 and 18 to rise with the tank 1. A suction effect is thus created inside the chamber and water passes through the holes 14 in the tube 11 and into the chamber. The upwards movement of the tank 1 is limited by the engagement of the flanges 20 and 21 respectively on the tube 19 and tubular member 22 and the water entering the chamber is free to leave the chamber through the outlet pipe 24, valve 25 and pipe 26.
When the tide flows out or the wave has passed, the tank 1 falls and forces the water in the chamber through the non-return valve 25. At the same time, the region of the tube 11 at which the holes 14 are located is forced down within the tube 15 so that the water within the chamber cannot escape from said chamber. via the holes 14. The tank 1 is allowed to fall until its base rests on the flange 21 when the tubes 11, 15 and 19 are telescoped within one another within the tubular member 22. With the next incoming tide or wave, the tank 1 will again rise creating a suction effect within the chamber and the whole sequence of events is repeated. The non-return valve 25 prevents water which has previously passed into the pipe 26 from re-entering the chamber via the outlet pipe 24 during the rising movement of the tank 1 when a suction effect is created in the chamber.
By means of the apparatus according to the invention, tidal or wave movement can be used to generate hydraulic power which can be put to a number of uses and which represents a cheap source of energy.
If desired, the float member may support more than one telescopic chamber, each of which is otherwise arranged as described herein; for example, there may be provided three such chambers spaced equidistantly about the base of the float member.
