Abstract
159,131. Barbet et Fils et Cie, E. Feb. 11, 1920, [Convention date]. Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction.- In the continuous rectification of liquid air, the cold necessary to compensate for loss by radiation &c. is obtained by operating the nitrogen compressor at a higher pressure, the cold being produced by the adiabatic expansion of the unliquefied portion of the nitrogen. The Figure shows a modification of the portion of the apparatus shown in Specification 131,321. Rectified nitrogen from the upper part of the rectifying column A, A<1> passes through exchangers V, H and a water cooler K to the compressor J, wherein it is compressed say to 4 kilograms per sq. cm. and passed back through the cooler and heat exchangers. A separators y allows the liquefied portion of the nitrogen to pass to the top of the column A, A<1>; the gaseous residue passes through a motor X or expander to a coil E immersed in the liquid oxygen at the base of the column and is liquefied, passing up through a separator e and heat exchanger R<3> to the top of the column. Specification 129,648 also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the process is applicable to gases other than air. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
