Description
(54) WIPER FOR SCREENS OF MOTOR VEHICLES
(71) We, ROBERT BOSCH GmbH, a
German company of Postfach 50, 7 Stuttgart 1, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The invention concerns a wiper.
A wiper is known comprising a wiper arm, and a wiper blade hinged to the free end of the wiper arm by way of an adapter. For this purpose, the wiper blade has a hinge pin which is insertable into a recess of the adapter serving as a pin bearing, by way of a resiliently expandible assembly passage. The adapter also has an insert channel in which the free end of the wiper arm can be locked.
For the purpose of holding the wiper arm end in the insert channel, one wall of the channel is designed as a resilient tongue which presses a projection of the wiper arm end into a recess in another channel wall.
However, such an arrangement may not guarantee satisfactory securing of the wiper blade on the wiper arm. In particular, in the event of washing the motor vehicle in an automatic car wash, the wiper blade may be torn from the wiper arm by the washing rollers and lost.
The present invention provides a wiper for screens of motor vehicles, comprising a wiper arm, a wiper blade hinged to the free end of the wiper arm provided with a hinge pin, and an adapter, which is disposed between the wiper arm end and the hinge pin, which is provided with a bearing for the pin, the pin being insertable into the bearing through a resiliently expandible assembly passage, and which includes an insert channel, provided with a catch, for the wiper arm end, a projection of the catch, being lockable in a recess in the wiper arm end, thereby securing the wiper.arm end, by the hinge pin when the hinge pin is in the bearing.
By virtue of the locking arrangement, the adapter and the wiper blade cannot become detached unintentionally from the wiper arm.
The invention is described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a wiper arm inserted in an adapter, which is shown in section along the line I-I in- Fig. 5, the adapter being hinged on a pin of a wiper blade frame part,
Fig. 2 shows the wiper arm and adapter as per Fig. 1, the wiper arm being removed from the adapter,
Fig. 3 shows a section through the adapter,
Fig. 4 is a side view of the adapter, and
Fig. 5 is a section through the wiper blade frame part, along the line V-V in Fig. 1, with the adapter indicated by dash-dot lines.
The wiper device of the invention comprises a wiper arm 10, at whose free end 12 an adapter 14 is detachably mounted. The adapter 14, for its part, is engaged on a hinge pin 16 of a wiper blade frame part 18 in such a manner that it is safeguarded against unintentional detachment and is pivotable in the direction of the double arrow 20 (Fig. 1).
As shown particularly in Figs. 3 and 4, the adapter 14 has a crown piece 22, wherein an insert channel 24 for the wiper arm end 12 is located. The insert channel 24 is partially sealed at one end by a wall 26. The crosssection of the insert channel 24 is adapted to the cross-section of the wiper arm end 12, so that this wiper arm end 12 can be inserted into the channel 24 with no clearance.
Moulded onto the crown piece 22 of the adapter 14 are two cheeks 28 and 30 which are spaced apart from each other and are joined together by two cross struts 32 which are spaced apart from each other. Disposed in the two cheeks 28 and 30 are recesses 34 which are coextensive with each other respectively and serve as the mounting for the hinge pin 16. The recesses 34 each open into a resiliently expandible assembly passage 36.
The expansibility of the assembly passages 36 is achieved in that elongate openings 38 in the cheeks 28 and 30 are each disposed laterally of the passages 36. Because the adapter 14 is made from a resilient material, the lateral walls of the assembly passage 36 can be temporarily expanded so that the hinge pin 16 can reach the recesses 34. After the walls of the assembly passages 36 have sprung back into their original position, the adapter 14 is securely mounted on the hinge pin 16 (Fig. 1). Between the two cross struts 32, the insert channel 24 is substantially defined by a resiliently deflectable arm 40 which is connected to one cross strut 32. The arm 40 is provided with a cam 42 which protrudes into the insert channel 24 and engages within a recess 44 in the free end 12 of the wiper arm 10. The arm 40 is provided with a lever 46 at its end remote from the cross strut 32 to which it is joined, this lever extending substantially at right angles to the arm 40 and protruding down beyond the cheeks. The arm 40 and its lever 46 are narrower than the gap between the two cheeks 28 and 30, so that the arm 40 is movable with its cam 42 between the two cheeks 28 and 30. In the transitional region between the crown piece 22 and each cheek 28 and 30, the adapter 14 comprises a respective shoulder 48 which, when the adapter is located on the hinge pin 16, is spaced from counter-shoulders 50 which cooperate with these shoulders 48 and are formed by the top edges of lateral walls 52 of the wiper blade frame part 18 (Fig. 5).
The form of the arm 40 and its lever 46 is designed so that, when the adapter 14 is engaged on the hinge pin 16 (Fig. 1), the arm 40 is supported on the hinge pin 16 with its region 54 remote from the catch provided by the cam 42. In this position, the cam 42 protrudes into the recess 44 of the wiper arm end 12, so that the wiper arm 10 cannot be removed from its insert channel 24 in the crown piece 22 of the adapter 14. However, if the wiper arm 10 is to be detached from the adapter 14, the adapter 14 must firstly be removed from the hinge pinn 16. This is effected by swivelling the wiper blade relative to the wiper arm 10 about the hinge pin 16 to such an extent that the shoulders 48 of the adapter come to abut against the countershoulders 50 of the wiper blade frame part 18. By means of a further swivel of the wiper blade in the appropriate direction of the double arrow 20, a lever force is exerted upn the adapter 14 which is sufficient to extend the assembly passage 36 and to press the hinge pin 16 out of its mounting. Only afterwards is it possible to swivel the arm 40 by means of its lever 46 in the direction of the arrow 56 (Fig. 2) so that the cam 42 can leave its recess 44 and the wiper arm can be removed from its insert duct 24 in the direction of the double arrow 58.
The assembly of the wiper device is to be effected as follows: First of all the wiper arm 10 is inserted with its free end 12 into the insert channel 24 of the adapter 14, the arm 40 being resiliently deflected downwards until the wiper arm meets the wall 26 of the insert channel 24. The arm 40 can now simultaneously spring back into its original position because the recess 44 in the wiper arm end 12 is located in the preliminary stop position, locking therein being made possible by the cam 42. After this first step, the wiper blade can now reach the recesses 34 of the cheeks 30 and 32 in the direction of the arrow 60 with its hinge pin 16 because of the pressing-in of the hinge pin 16. In this position illustrated in Fig. I, the region 54 of the arm 40 remote from the cam 42 is now supported again on the hinge pin 16 in such a manner that it is impossible to loosen the catch connection 42, 44 between the adapter 14 and wiper arm 10 because of the abovedescribed locking.
