Abstract

158,990. Martineau, F. L. Nov. 14, 1919. Steering-gear.-Relates to steering-gear for double rudders of the kind described in Specification 3249/14 and comprises a pair of continuouslydriven variable-delivery reversible pumps each adapted to operate an hydraulic motor connected to a rudder member and means for controlling the pumps whereby the rudder members are moved in the same direction or oppositely, floating-link hunting-mechanism being, also provided. Arms 3, 4 on the rudder stocks are connected by links 7, 8 with the rams of the double motors 11, 12 and 13, 14. The motors are supplied with fluid under pressure by pumps 15, 16 continuously driven by a. prime mover 17. or from the main engine or propeller shaft. The control spindles 18, 19 cf the pumps are coupled to floating levers 24, 25, which are connected to the rams by hunting links 30, 31 and to a second set of control levers 38, 39 by rods 36, 37. The levers 38, 39 are jointly movable longitudinally by a rod 43 or pivotally by rods 49, 50 from a control rod 59. Movement of the rod 59 results in the rudder members being moved together for steering; movement of the rod 43 results in the rudder members being moved oppositely for braking or reversing. The controls 59, 43 may be moved separately, or both may be operated at the same time. In large installations where angularity of the levers may result in errors, toothed sectors and racks may be substituted.
