Description

(54) A BEARER-, SUPPORT-, OR COVER- PLATE OR SLAB AND A METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME (71) We, MARCO ALARI, Italian Nationality, t of Via Palagetto 28, Bagno a Ripoli, Italy, and GIUSEPPE BOTTINI, Italian Nationality, of Loano/Savona, Italy, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a bearer-, support-, or cover- plate or slab which may be for a wall or floor covering or for use as a panel, table top or other covering.
According to the invention, a bearer-, support-, or cover- plate or slab is characterised in that it is a marble plate or slab with a surface profiled or contoured by an artificial erosion whereby softer marble constituents are removed and the harder marble constituents stand proud. Said profiled or contoured surface preferably has a coating or a colourless transparent matt (flat finish) lacquer which may be a printed-on, paintedon, spread-on, stuck-on, or sprayed-on layer or film. The plate or slab may, in addition to being capable of a technical function, at the same time also be used for decorative application.
Also, according to the invention, a method of manufacturing a bearer-, support-, or cover- plate or slab is characterised in that the plate or slab is of marble and has a surface thereof which is profiled or contoured by sand blasting in sand blasting apparatus which is operated at a pressure of 3 to 15 kg/cm2, and in that the duration of sand blasting is 10 to 20 minutes/m2, said sand blasting causing an artificial erosion whereby softer marble constituents are removed and the harder marble constituents stand proud. The sand blasting treatment gives rise to an artificial erosion which would typically take between one hundred and a thousand years under natural conditions. The sandblasting achieves extremely quickly ageing of the marble imparting to it a rough profiled or contoured surface.Quite apart from the aesthetic effect of such a treatment the plate or slab surface will also become skid and slip resistant so that new fields of applications are opened up for plates or slabs treated in this way such as floor coverings for swimming baths and the like. Such surfaces also show up scratch and impact marks to a lesser extent.
Said sand blasting apparatus may be operated at a pressure of 12 kg/cm2; and preferably the plate or slab surface is sand blasted for 15 minutes/m2.
A section and side elevation of a marble plate or slab constituting an exemplary embodiment of the invention are shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
The marble plate or slab 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2 has a surface 2 which has been given a profiled or contoured structure by a sand blasting treatment. This sand blasting treatment may also extend to include the faces of the sides of the plate or slab 1. The underside 3 of the plate or slab 1 is substantially untreated and has retained the more or less flat structure produced on cutting of the marble. The profile or contour depth of the profiled or contoured surface 2 may be varied as a function of the intensity and duration of the sand blasting treatment.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A bearer-, support-, or cover- plate or slab, characterised in that it is a marble
