Description

(54) AN IMPROVED DRAUGHT-EXCLUDING UNIT (71) I, ANGUS FRASER KIRKCALDY, of Helmsdale, 16, Hatherden Avenue, Parkstone, Poole, Dorset, a British Subject, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a Patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following Statement: The invention relates to an elongate draughtexcluding unit for attachment to the threshold of a doorframe of a hinged door or the frame of a hinged window.
According to the invention an elongate draught-excluding unit for attachment to the sill of a frame of a hinged door or window and having an at least substantially similar crosssection throughout its length, comprises a pair of spaced apart side walls integrally connected to a bridging portion, and a flange extending upwardly from one of said side walls and having fixed thereto resilient sealing means positioned above the bridging portion and adapted, in use, to contact, and make a weather-proof seal against, a side face of the hinged door or window when the latter is in a closed position with the bottom above the bridging portion.
Suitably the flange is provided with an elongate slot adjacent its upper end into which a part of the resilient sealing means is fixed.
Typically the sealing means includes a solid portion outside of the slot which is adapted, in use, to contact and be deformed by the said side face of the hinged door or window.
The bridging portion and the flange suitably define a trough, extending lengthwise of the draught-excluding unit, for the collection of water, e.g. rainwater. Typically drain holes are provided in the unit for draining water from the trough. A strip depending from the said flange may be provided to mask the lower ends of said drain holes. The bridging portion may be shaped to provide an overhanging edge of the trough defined by the said bridging position to deter the passage of any water collected in the trough across the unit.
A plurality of screw holes may be provided in the bridging portion.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, the sole figure of which shows a section through a draught-excluding unit, according to the invention, fixed to the threshold of a doorway.
The drawing shows an elongate draught.
excluding and weather-proofing threshold unit, generally designated by the reference numeral 1, attached to a threshold 2 beneath a hinged door 3, the latter being shown in its closed position.
The threshold unit 1 suitably comprises a strip of extruded aluminium (or aluminium alloy) having a pair of spaced-apart side walls 4 and 5 integrally connected to a bridging portion 6. A flange 7 is integrally joined to the wall 5 and extends upwardly therefrom to define, with a sloping part 8 of the bridging portion 6, a rain water-collecting trough 9.
The upper end of the flange 7 is provided with an elongate slot 10 having a neck 11 of reduced cross-section. A strip of material, e.g.
neoprene comprising a solid portion 12 inte grallyjoined to a tubular portion 13 via a neck 14 of reduced cross-section, is attached to the flange 7, the solid portion 12 being anchored in the slot 10 with the neck 14 of the strip of material received in the neck 11 of the slot 1 0.
A plurality of spaced-apart drain holes 1 5 is provided in the lower part of the flange 7.
These drain holes 15 communicate with, and slope downwardly from, the bottom of the trough 9 and serve to drain any water, e.g. rain water, from the trough. A depending strip 16 integrally joined to the flange 7 is spaced from the lower end of the holes 15 and serves to mask the holes 15 thereby preventing a draught from blowing through the drain holes.
In order to deter the passage across the threshold of any water collected in the trough 9 (for example when the door 3 is open in the direction indicated by arrow A thereby enabling a draught to pass across the threshold), the bridging portion 6 is dimensioned to provide an overhanging edge or lip 17 above that side of the trough 9 defined by the bridging portion 6.
The unit 1 is attached to the threshold 2 by a plurality, of screws 18 located in screw holes 19 provided in the bridging portion 6. In addition a mastic composition may be applied to a space 20 formed between the wall 4 and an inwardly extending foot 21 and a space 22 formed between the wall 5 and an inwardly extending foot 23.
As can be seen in the drawing, when the door 3 is in its closed position, an outwardly facing surface 24 of the door makes sealing contact with the resilient tubular portion 13 of the threshold unit. This sealing contact prevents a draught or rainwater from passing beneath the door 3.
Although the specific description has referred to a threshold unit for a door, it should be understood that the invention also applies to draught-excluding units for hinged windows.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. An elongate draught-excluding unit for attachment to the sill of a frame of a hinged door or window and having an at least substantially similar cross-section throughout its length, comprising a pair of spaced apart side walls integrally connected to a bridging portion, and a flange extending upwardly from one of said side walls and having fixed thereto resilient sealing means positioned above the bridging portion and adapted, in use, to contact, and make a weather-proof seal against, a side face of the hinged door or window when the latter is in a closed position with its bottom above the bridging portion.
2. A draught-excluding unit according to claim 1, in which the said flange is provided with an elongate slot adjacent its upper end into which a part of the resilient sealing means is fixed.
3. A draught-excluding unit according to claim 2, in which the said sealing means includes a solid portion fixed within said slot and a resilient tubular portion outside of the slot which is adapted, in use, to contact and be deformed by the said side face of the hinged door or window.
4. A draught-excluding unit according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the bridging portion and the flange define a trough, extending lengthwise of the draught-excluding unit, for the collection of water.
5. A draught-excluding unit according to claim 4, provided with drain holes for draining water from the trough.
6. A draught-excluding unit according to claim 5, comprising a strip depending from the said flange for masking the lower ends of said drain holes.
7. A draught-excluding unit according to any one of claims 4 to 6, in which the bridging portion is shaped to provide an overhanging edge above the side of the trough defined by the said bridging position to deter the passage of any water collected in the trough across the unit.
8. A draught-excluding unit according to any one of the preceding claims, in which a plurality of screw holes are provided in the bridging portion.
9. A draught-excluding unit according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the said side walls, bridging portion and flange form parts of an extruded product.
10. An elongate draught-excluding unit for attachment to the frame of a hinged door or window, the unit being constructed and arranged substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawing.
