Description
(54) HAIRBRUSH
(71) I, NIGEL JOHN BLYTHIN, a
British Subject of 34 Cedar Grove, Hoole,
Chester, Cheshire, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a Patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to hairbrushes.
An object of the invention is to provide a hairbrush in which cleaning between the bristles is facilitated.
According to the invention a hairbrush comprises bristles mounted on a first part and extending through openings in a second part mounted on the first part so that free lengths of the bristles extend beyond a side of the second part facing away from said first part, said first and second parts being movable relatively one to another, the arrangement being such as to permit relative movement between the bristles and second part over the whole of said free lengths.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of a hairbrush formed according to the invention with the second part juxtaposed the first part;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the brush in Fig.
1 with the first and second parts moved apart;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of a fragment of the brush head in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of another embodiment of the hairbrush formed according to the invention;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the brush in Fig. 4 with the bristles omitted, and Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modification of the hairbrush in Figs. 1 to 3.
With reference to Figs. 1 to 3, the hairbrush has a head 2 with a handle 4 formed by a casing which is in two parts 6 and 8. The parts 6 and 8 are of hollow or dished form and may be of moulded plastics, and when in the attitude shown in Fig. 1, are secured together by releasable securing means (not shown). The casing part 6 is formed with an oval aperture in which a complementary shaped convex plate 10 is secured. This plate has through bores 12 in each of which a respective bristle 14 is located so that as shown in Fig. 1 free lengths of the bristles project beyond the side of the plate 10 facing away from the casing part 8.
The bristles may be of plastics, for example, nylon, each having an end enlarged by a pip 16 (Fig. 3) so that the pips cannot pass through bores 18 in a mounting plate 20 through which the bristles pass. The mounting plate 20 is attached to the inside of the casing part 8 to the outside of which is attached a plate or pad 22 adhered to the plate 20 and pips 16 whereby the bristle ends 16 are held captive between the plate 20 and pad 22.
Preferably, the casing part 6 is provided with rods 24 passing freely through bores 26 in the casing part 8 and having heads or stops 28 of greater diameter than bores 26. Each rod 24 is surrounded by a respective helical spring 30 braced between the casing parts.
The releasable securing means holding the casing parts 6 and 8 together may be of the type which can be released by inserting and turning a coin in a recess in either of the parts to release a resilient catch component. When the securing means is released, the springs 30 urge the casing parts apart to the extent permitted by the length of the rods 24. This situation is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 where the free ends bristles 14 are retracted into the bores 12. Grease, hairs and dust left behind by the retraction of the bristles can now be removed from the outer face of the plate 10 without the bristles interfering. If the bores 12 are sufficiently narrow the bristles can be subjected to a cleaning scraping action by sides of the bores when casing parts spring apart.
Afterwards the casing parts are pressed together so that the securing means holds them in the position shown in Fig. 1.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the casing parts 6 and 8 are releasably secured together. In this embodiment, the plate 10 in
Fig. 1 is replaced by a grid 10' which may be a mesh of stainless steel wires. In this case the casing parts 6 and 8 can be completely separable. The act of separating the casing parts so that the part 6 can be moved clear of the bristles 14 means that the part 6 carries away dirt and hairs on the grid 10' which can then be cleaned. Because the grid spacings are relatively large the grid 10' can, comparatively easily, be fitted back over the bristles so that a number of bristles may pass through the same grid space, and then the casing part 6 and 8 secured together.
In Fig. 6, the bores 12 are enlarged and the bristles 14 arranged in clusters 14a, each provided at one end with a pip 16a common to all the bristles of the cluster. Each cluster passes through a respective bore 12. In this manner a lesser number of bores 12 need be provided than in the brush in Figs. 1 to 3.
It will be appreciated that the hairbrushes described above can to some extent be regarded as self cleaning.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A hairbrush comprising bristles mounted on a first part and extending through openings in a second part mounted on the first part so that free lengths of the bristles extend beyond a side of the second part facing away from said first part, said first and second parts being movable relatively one to another, the arrangement being such as to permit relative movement between the bristles and second part over the whole of said free lengths.
2. A hairbrush as claimed in claim 1 provided with resilient means acting to urge the first and second parts apart, and stop means to limit the extent to which the first and second parts can be urged apart.
3. A hairbrush as claimed in Claim 2 in which one of said parts is provided with a rod passing through a bore in the other part, and said rod has an end with a head of larger diameter than the bore.
4. A hairbrush as claimed in any preceding claim in which the second member is provided with bores constituting said openings.
5. A hairbrush as claimed in any preceding
Claim, in which a plurality of bristles extend through the same opening.
6. A hairbrush as claimed in Claim 1 in which the openings are spaces in a grid.
7. A hairbrush as claimed in Claim 6, in which the grid is formed by wires.
8. A hairbrush as claimed in any preceding claim in which the first and second parts are securable together by releasable securing means.
9. A hairbrush substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
