Description

(54) A HAND TRACTOR FOR CULTIVATING WATER LOGGED GROUND (71) I, MAGGIE SMITH VILLARUZ, a Philippine citizen of Iloilo City, Philippines, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a farm implement for cultivating water-logged ground such as rice fields.
Commonly used tractors for cultivating rice fields can not be utilized effectively in fields where water is at knee depth or deeper and the invention aims to solve this problem without resorting to the use of very complicated and expensive machinery.
According to the invention there is provided a machine for use in cultivating water-logged ground comprising an engine mounted on a float of sufficient buoyancy to support the engine, propulsion means operatively connectable to the engine for propelling the machine, a handle by which the machine can be guided by an operator who is walking or wading on the ground, and means for connection with the engine and float of a cultivating implement.
Preferred features of the invention are set out in the claims.
One preferred form of the machine comprises a float; an engine held on a support on top of the float; an inclined U-shaped handle, the free ends of which are connected to the sides of the float; a pair of legs which brace the handle in its inclined postion; an adjustable cultivating implement held behind the float by a structure which is .pivoted to the said legs; a traction device in front of the float; a water guard covering part of the traction device; transmission gearing arranged to drive a shaft connected to the traction device; a V-belt drive connected between the engine and the transmission; and an idler pulley which regulates the tension of the V-belt.
A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure I is a perspective view of a hand tractor constructed in accordance with the invention and showing different components; Figure 2 is a side view of the same tractor showing all the elements in the construction; and Figure 3 is a top view of the same hand tractor showing top attachments, a float housing, a transmission device and a belt drive.
Referring now to the different figures of the drawing, wherein like reference numerals designate the same part throughout, there is shown a hand tractor 10 comprising a totally sealed vacumatic float housing 11, a cultivating tool or implement in the form of a harrow 12 with an adjustable operating handle 13, a traction device in the form of a pair of paddle wheels 14 and 14a, a protective water covering 15 for an engine 16 forming the main drive, a transmission case 17 and a handle 18 which is held by the operator.
The float housing 11, which is preferably made of G.I. sheets, is provided with an engine support 19 on the top mid-portion where the engine or motor 16 is detachably installed. Connected on the front end 20 of the support 19 is a protective guard 15 whose cross-section is a ninety degree arc of a circle. The purpose of this guard is to protect the engine 16 from water splashed up by the paddle wheels 14 and 14a. The front end 20 of the support also holds a transmission case 17.
On the top mid-side portion of the float housing 11 a handle 18 is connected. This handle 18 is inclined upwardly, is supported by a pair of upright bars or pipes 21 and 22, and is reinforced by a U-shaped G.I. pipe 23 at the U-shaped end 24.
The detachable harrow 12 is connected to the back portion of the float 11 by a frame 25. This frame 25 consists of a pair of cross-bars or pipes 26 and 27, a longitudinal bar or pipe 28 and an adjusting handle 13.
These cross-bars 26 and 27 are connected to the longitudinal bar 28 through hinge or pivot members which slide on the uprights 21 and 22.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A machine for use in cultivating water-logged ground comprising an engine mounted on a float of sufficient buoyancy to support the engine, propulsion means operatively connectable to the engine for propelling the machine, a handle by which the machine can be guided by an operator who is walking or wading on the ground, and means for connection with the engine and float of a cultivating implement.
2. A machine according to claim 1, including a paddle wheel mounted at the front of the float and connected to be driven by the engine.
3. A machine according to claim 2, including a guard partly surrounding the paddle wheel to protect the engine from splashes.
4. A machine according to claim 3, in which a transmission device for transmitting power from the engine to the paddle wheel passes through the guard.
5. A machine according to claim 4, including a belt for transmitting power from the engine or motor to the transmission device and an idler pulley for regulating the tension of the belt.
6. A machine according to any preceding claim, including means for mounting a cultivating implement at the rear of the float.
7. A machine according to claim 6, in which the means for mounting the implement enables the latter to be adjusted in height relative to the float.
8. A machine according to any preceding claim including a tilling implement mounted on the machine so as to project with the ground behind the float.
9. A cultivator for water-logged ground comprising: a float; an engine held on a support on top of the float an inclined U-shaped handle, the free ends of which are connected to the sides of the float; a pair of legs which brace the handle in its inclined position; an adjustable cultivating implement held behind the float by a structure which is pivoted to the said legs; a traction device in front of the float; a water guard covering part of the traction device; transmission gearing arranged to drive a shaft connected to the traction device; a V-belt drive connected between the engine and the transmission; and an idler pulley which regulates tension of the V-belt.
10. A machine for cultivating waterlogged ground substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
