Description
(54) APPARATUS FOR CIRCULATING LIQUIDS OR
LIQUIDS CONTAINING SOLIDS
(71) We, WILLIAM E. FARRER LI
MITED, a British Company, of Welby
Road, Hall Green, Birmingham B28 8HR, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to apparatus treating sludge or other liquids containing solids and, whilst the invention can be used in a variety of manufacturing or treatment processes, it is primarily intended for use in the treatment of sewage sludge in a sludge digester plant. The object of the invention is to provide such apparatus in an improved form.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided an apparatus for treating sludge or other liquids containing solids, said apparatus for comprising a tank for containing the sludge or other liquid to be treated together with means for circulating the sludge or other liquid, said circulating means comprising a conduit which is provided with an external heater and which at its lower end is connected to or is in communication with the interior of the tank at or adjacent to the bottom thereof and at its upper end is connected to or is in communication with the interior of the tank at a level which is adjacent to the intended level of sludge or other liquid in the tank, there being also provided a pipe which is adapted to be connected to a source of a pressurised gas and which has an outlet which enters said conduit at a position which is at or above the mid-point of the length thereof whereby in use a pressurised gas admitted to said conduit from the pipe will cause upward movement of sludge or other liquid through the conduit, such sludge or liquid being drawn from the bottom part of the tank and returned to the upper part thereof.
The conduit may also be provided with a further pipe connection through which any desired substance can be added to the sludge or other liquid flowing through the conduit.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional elevation showing one example of an apparatus in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional elevation showing an alternative form of apparatus in accordance with the invention.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, the apparatus shown therein is intended for use in the treatment of sewage sludge in a sludge digester plant although of course it is to be understood that apparatus in accordance with the present invention can be used in the treatment of other liquids containing solids.
In the example shown in Figure 1, there is provided a tank 10 which is arranged in use to contain the sludge 11 which is to be treated and said tank may be provided if desired, with a roof 12. There is also provided circulating means 13 which is mounted externally of said tank at one side thereof. The circulating means comprises a conduit 14 which extends in a generally vertical direction and which is connected at its lower end to the interior of said tank 10 by means of a pipe 15 having an open inner end which is disposed on or adjacent the bottom of the tank. At its upper end said conduit 14 is also connected to the interior of the tank 10 by means of a pipe 16 having an open inner end which is disposed just below the intended level of sludge in the tank. The conduit 14 is also provided with an external heater 17 of any convenient form and such heater may for example comprise a heating jacket having an inlet 18 and an outlet 19 for hot water which can be caused to flow through the jacket for the purpose of heating sludge which in use will flow through the conduit.
There is also provided a pipe 20 which is adapted at one end to be connected to a source of pressurised gas (not shown) and which extends at its other end (which thus forms an outlet for said pressurised gas) into the interior of said conduit 14 at a position at or above the mid-point of the length thereof, Conveniently, said jacket 17 is split into upper and lower parts which are interconnected by a connection 17a so as to allow the connection of said pipe 20 to the conduit 14. In the case of sewage sludge treatment the aforesaid gas may comprise methane or other gases which collect at the top of the tank during treatment and which can be drawn off and compressed by a suitable compressor. Any other suitable gas can however be used if desired. The pressurised gas is however admitted continuously via said pipe 20 into the conduit 14 and on entering the conduit it will entrain the sludge and lift it upwardly so as to cause such sludge to flow out from the upper end of said conduit into the tank via pipe 16 whilst at the same time of course sludge will be drawn from the bottom of the tank into the bottom of the conduit via pipe 15. A continuous circulation of the sludge will thus be effected and at the same time the sludge will be heated by said heater 17 during its passage through the conduit. Furthermore, if desired a further pipe connection 21 can be made to the conduit at any convenient position therein, such further connection being used for the purpose of adding any desired substance to the sludge as it flows through the conduit.
By introducing the pressurised gas at a position which is at or above the mid-point of the conduit 14 as above described, the quantity of gas that is required for any given flow rate of sludge through the conduit must be increased as compared with the quantity of gas that would be required if the connection to the conduit is at a position below its central point. However, by reducing the effective depth (considering the system as a whole) at which the gas is introduced, there will be a lower hydrostatic pressure against which the gas must be fed. This latter factor will reduce the cost of the energy required for circulating the sludge and obviously there will be an optimum point for admitting the gas to the conduit at which the overall cost of the energy required is at a minimum but, by ensuring that the gas is admitted to the conduit at or above the mid-point of the conduit 14 as above described, the cost of the energy required for circulation is less than hitherto known systems in which the pressurised gas is admitted at or adjacent the lower end of the conduit. The tank 10 may be provided with a plurality of conduits 14 as above described and in this case, the conduits would be spaced around the exterior of the tank. Furthermore, the inner ends of the associated pipes 16 may be arranged so that they discharge sludge into the tank in a generally tangential direction and in a similar sense so that the plurality of such discharges will promote a rotary swirling movement of the sludge.
In the alternative arrangement shown in
Figure 2 the circulating means 22 is mounted in the interior of the tank 10. Said circulating means comprises a conduit 23 which at its lower end draws sludge or other liquid from or near to the bottom of the tank whereas its upper end is arranged to discharge the sludge or other liquid into the tank just below the upper surface of said sludge or other liquid. The circulating means is suspended from the roof 12 of the tank by means of a cylindrical hanger 24 and a pipe 25 is connected at one end to said conduit 23 at or above the mid-point thereof, the other end of said pipe 25 being connected in use to a supply of pressurised gas as before. There is also provided a heating jacket 26 which is connected at its bottom end to a pipe 27 and its upper end to a further pipe (not shown) whereby a hot liquid can be circulated through said jacket, there being a connection 28 to connect the upper part of said jacket to the lower part thereof, the jacket being split into two parts to enable the connection of the pipe 25 to the conduit 23 to be made.
