Description
(54) APPARATUS FOR COMMINUTING HOT SINTERED MATERIAL
(71) We, KRUPP-KOPPERS GESELL
SCHAFT MIT BESCHRANKTER HAFTUNG, a
Company of the Federal Republic of Ger
many of Moltkestråsse 29,- -4300 Lessen, West
Germany, do hereby declare the invention,
for which we pray that a patent may be
granted two us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particulafly- des- cribed in and by the- fpllowing statement:: This invention'relates td crushing appa ratus-for comminuting hot sintered material, such apparatus comprising a rotatable
crusher shaft having a plurality of crusher
arms disposed thereon, and a grate'cooperat- ing with the crusher arms.
In crushing - apparatus - of such construc
tion, the grate conventionally comprises a
horizontal or inclinéd bar grate having a
plurality of bars so spaced apart that; each crusher arm is adapted to pass between a
corresponding gap ' between two adjacent
bars.A consequence of such an arrangement
is that a particular zone of the bars of--the grate is subjected to very high stresses during
a crushing operation as a result of thè mechanical action of the crusher armS::"In the case of crushing apparatus for the corn- minution of hot sintered material exiting
a sintering plant, the grate parts are in addi
tion exposed almost continuously to inten
sive heat, causing additional'stresses in the
grate parts.
As a result of these stresses the bars of
the grate are subject to comparatively inten
sive wear, and therefore have to be replaced
at intervals. Replacement of grate bars not only entails' expenditure for the necessary 'materials and labour, but, more importantly, involves interrupting operations of the crush
ing apparatus with adverse effects on the economy of, for example, a complete sinter
ing plant.
The object of the invention is therefore
to provide crushing apparatus for comminut
ing hot sintered material, the grate of which can- have an appreciably length-ened grate
life compared with that of conventional
grates. To this end, according to the inven
tion, the grate of such crushing apparatus is formed from plates mounted on a shaft.
Accordingly, one aspect of the invention
provides crushing apparatus for comminut
ing hot sintered material, comprising a rotat- able crusher shaft having 'a plurality of
crusher arms disposed thereon; and a grate
adapted to cooperate with the crusher arms and comprising a plurality of rotatable plates
mounted on a grate shaft.
The plates can be of various configura
tions. For example, the plates can be disc' like, with a circular cross-section. Such cir culariplates may be mounted on the grate
shaft for rotation with respect to'the shaft 'such that in use of the crushing apparatus
rotation of the crusher arm and consequent
movement of'the material to be comminuted
causes the plates to rotate in the opposite
'direction to that of the crusher arms.Alter-
natively, such circular plates may be fixed in rotation to the grate shaft, so that the plates --and shaft may rotate together in the
direction opposite to the direction of rota
tion of the crusher arms: such rotation of
the plates and shaft may be caused either
by the action of material moved by the
crusher arms, or by drive means adapted to cause rotation of the grate shaft and con stituted either by the crusher shaft drive means or by separate drive means.
Rotation of circular plates as described
above results in different parts of the peri phery of the plates being subjected to the
mechanical and heat stresses discussed above.
Because the periphery of each plate is many
times greater than the zone subjected to
stress at any particular time, the life of the
grate thus constructed is increased as com- pared with grates of conventional construc
tion.
The plates may also be constructed as
polygons, for example hexagons, the plates bring fixed in rotation to the grate shaft with
corresponding faces of the plates aligned in
parallel relationship. In this case, in use of
the crushing- apparatus the shaft and plates
are fixed in position with a set of aligned
faces of the plates disposed in an operative
position and constituting a horizontal or in
clined grate surface. In the event of wear
of a particular set of faces of the plates,
the grate shaft is rotated to bring an unworn
set of aligned faces of the plates into the operative position. In this manner it is thus possible to provide a grate with a very much extended life as compared with conventional grates. Moreover, rotation of the grate shaft requires no special materials and little labour, and can be carried out very rapidly, reducing the time during which crushing operations need be interrupted for replacement of a worn grate.
Advantageously, a reception table is provided upstream of the crushing apparatus for receiving hot sintered material to be crushed, e.g. from a sintering machine, and for absorbing the impact forces of the material received, and thereafter supplying the material to the grate for crushing.
The life of the grate of crushing apparatus in accordance with the invention may be further prolonged by applying a cooling medium, preferably water, to the plates at a location before and/or after the region in which crushing occurs in the crushing apparatus.
The invention will be further described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of crushing apparatus according to the invention and provided with circular cross-section plates;
FIGURE 2 is a partial plan view of the embodiment of Figure 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a side elevation of another embodiment of crushing apparatus according to the invention and provided with plates having a hexagonal cross-section.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the illustrated arrangement comprises an inclined reception table 1 for receiving hot sintered material to be crushed, e.g. sintered material discharged from a sintering plant. Crushing apparatus is disposed at the lower end of the table 1 and comprises a horizontal crusher shaft 2 having a plurality of crusher arms 3 fixed thereon in a series of vertical planes.
In the illustrated embodiment, three crusher arms are provided in each vertical plane.
The shaft 2 and the crusher arms 3 are adapted to rotate together in the direction of arrow A.
The crusher arms 3 cooperate with a crusher grate comprising a rotatable horizontal shaft 4, on which are fixed in rotation a plurality of circular cross-section plates or discs 5. The discs 5 are so arranged and constructed that each of the crusher arms 3 can pass between a corresponding gap between two adjacent discs in a crushing zone.
A series of nozzles 6 supply water to the periphery of the discs 5 upstream of the crushing zone to cool the discs 5, and thereby prolong the life of the grate.
In use of the arrangement, material to be crushed is fed to the receiving table 1 and thereafter supplied to the crushing zone of the crushing apparatus. The crusher shaft 2 and the attached crusher arms 3 are rotated in the direction A, the arms 3 passing between corresponding gaps between the discs 5, thereby crushing the material and causing the discs 5 and shaft 4 to rotate in the direction of arrow B.
The embodiment of Figure 3 is of similar construction to the above described embodiment, but includes a series of hexagonal cross-section plates 7 in place of the circular discs 5. The plates 7 are fixed in rotation to the shaft 4 with corresponding faces of the plates aligned in parallel relationship.
In use, the shaft 4 and plates 7 are fixed in position with a set of aligned faces of the plates disposed in an operative position: in the arrangement illustrated the aligned faces 8 are disposed in the operative position and constitute an inclined crushing zone comparable to the bars of the conventional grate.
The shaft 4 and plates 7 can be easily rotated to bring a different set of aligned faces, for example faces 9, into the operative position to provide a replacement crushing zone in the event of wear of a set of aligned faces.
