Description

(54) A CONTAINER CLOSED BY A LID (71) We, HENKEL KOMMANDIT GESELLSCHAFT AUF AKTIEN, of Henkelstrasse 67, 4000 Diisseldorf Holthausen, Federal Republic of Germany, a company organised under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a container closed by a lid and to a method of producing such a closed container.
A known container, for example, a drum for loose material, such as powdery washing agents, is provided with a lid connected with the body of the drum with the aid of an en circling band, wherein the band at the boundary between the rim of the lid and the body of the drum contains a tear-strip.
In known closure devices, especially for use for washing agents drums, a lid of conventional construction, especially a deep-drawn lid with a rim engaging over the drum, is inverted over the drum and a self-adhesive tape is then laid encirclingly over the overlapping lid rim and the drum body. Thereby, the self-adhesive tape encompasses the external surface of the, for example, overlapping lid rim. Usually, during the application of the self-adhesive tape, a tear-strip is provided under the tape.
The tear-strip serves, during the later opening of the drum, to sever the band centrally all round so that the lid can be lifted off. Expediently, the tear-thread runs round at the edge of the lid rim. In mass production, this process however presents difficulties.
According to the invention there is provided a container closed by a lid, wherein a first edge portion of a tape is between the lid and a peripheral rim region of the container and is affixed to the inside of the lid and a second edge portion of the tape affixed to the body of the container, the first and the second edge portions of the tape being separable to enable the lid to be removed from the container.
Preferably, the tape may be provided with a tear-strip between the first and the second edge portions. Advantageously, the container may be flanged at the peripheral rim region and the peripheral rim region of the lid may be shaped to conform to the flanged peripheral rim region of the container. The peripheral rim region of the container may be arcuately flanged inwardly of the container, and the peripheral rim region of the lid may be arched to conform to the arcuately flanged, peripheral rim region of the container.
Preferably, the lid rim may no longer encompass the container, for example a drum, rim. Furthermore, the lid may be constructed essentially as planar disc, the placing of which onto the respective drum presents fewer difficulties and the manufacture of which is simplified.
Advantageously, a good adhesion between drum and lid is attained, when the drum is flanged at the rim and, the lid rim is encirclingly arched to correspond to the flanged shape for area contact on the drum rim. In this case, the lid thus lies by an appreciable area on the drum rim and is there bonded to the band. For the gluing together, the tape or band may be provided with adhesive substance on the side facing the drum up to the tear strip in the region of its area to be applied onto the drum body. Beyond the tear strip at the beaded drum rim, the adhesive substance is however provided between lid and band.
The adhesive substance may be provided on the band as well as also on the bearing surface of the lid. The latter alternative has the advantage that the filling of the drum may take place after the application of the band.
As hereinbefore mentioned, the lid of the closure device may be constructed practically like a planar disc, while the rim of the disc may display an encircling arching matched- in area to the beaded shape of the rim of the drum body; thus, in this case, the lid rim without an overlapping edge may be laid substantially flat on the rim of the drum body and there be bonded to the band.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a cross-section through the upper part of a drum with lid, Fig. 2 shows a portion, to an enlarged scale, of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows a modification of the crosssection of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a lid 2, constructed essentially as planar disc, placed on the drum bodv 1. The lid 2 rests by its arched rim 3 on arcuately-flanged edge 4 (i.e. beaded) of the body 1. Applied to the body 1 is a band 5, which in the region of the edge of the lid rim 3 displays a tear strip 6.
The band 5 in the region 7 is bonded to the arched rim 3 of the lid 2 and in this region lies loosely on the beaded-over edge 4 of the drum body 1. Beyond the tear strip 6, however, the band 5 is glued to the drum body 1.
Fig. 2 shows the rim region of the drum lid 2 and that of the drum body 1 with the beaded rim 4. The band 5 in the region 7 underneath the lid rim 3 is glued to this and in the region 8 beyond the tear strip 6 to the drum body 1.
As shown, the lid rim 3 is provided with an encircling arching matched in area to the beaded shape of the drum rim. Thus, there results an appreciably large area of contact between the drum body and lid even without a lid rim engaging over the drum body.
Fig. 3 shows a lid with a lid rim 9 engaging over the drum body 1. A tear strip 6 is provided at the drum body 1 at a depth corresponding to the extent of the lid rim 9 in axial direction. The band 5 is here again bonded to the body up to the tear strip 6 and, beyond the tear strip, with the inside of the rim 3 of the drum lid and partially encompassing the beaded rim 4.
In the manufacture of the drum, the band is applied to the drum before the beading or flanging so that it is beaded or flanged therewith in the upper region, where the lid is to be placed on. However, this beaded section of the band may not be glued to the drum body.
Subsequently, the drum is closed by a lid which adheres fast to the beaded edge and therefore need not display a deep-drawn rim encompassing the drum body. The tear strip, which may be prefabricated on the rearside of the band, runs around the drum directly underneath the lid. When the tear strip is pulled off all round, the band is torn open along the corresponding line and the lid may be lifted off. In that case, the upper section of the band not glued to the drum body is also lifted off therewith and remains adhering to the inside of the lid.
