Abstract
158,457. Simpson, R. Jan. 9, 1920. Electromaganetic switches for inserting a resistance in an overloaded circuit and cutting it out automatically when the circuit is broken elsewhere. The construction shown comprises a compound-wound electromagnet A attracting two pivoted iron armatures e, f. The armature e is connected through a link l to a lever h carrying a main brush contact i, and an auxiliary sparktaking contact p, the circuit being normally continuous with a fixed contact k. The attracted end of the armature e is obstructed by a rollertipped lever f<1> attached to the other armature f. At a certain strength of excess current, depending on the, tensioning of the spring, the attraction of the armature f removes the lever f<1> out of the path of the armature e, which moves and operates the lever h, so opening the circuit at k. A magnetic blow-out coil suppresses sparking. The current is thus diverted from the series coil a<1> to the high-resistance shunt coil a<2> and remains in this condition until a switch is opened on the line. A thermal time-lag may be added in order to prevent operations by momentary overloads.
