Description

(54) IMPROVED CLIP FOR A BUTT JOINT (71) We, UNITED-CARR LIMITED, a British company of 67, Chiswell Street, London, EC1Y 4SY, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to an improved clip for butt jointing two members together each of which members is formed with a butt surface and a slot to receive a portion of the clip.
There have been many proposals for butt jointing the corners of picture frames and other similar frame members together with the aid of a spring metal clip. However, hitherto it has not been possible to provide a clip which ensures that the gap between the frame members is closed at the front of the frame and which also eliminates play between the two frame members forming the joint.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a clip for this purpose which ensures that the gap between the frame member is closed, at least at the front-face of the frame, which will substantially reduce if not completely eliminate play between the members making up a butt joint of the frame, and which is economic to manufacture and quick and simple to assemble.
According to one aspect of the present invention we provide a resilient clip for butt jointing two members together each of which members has a butt surface and a slot extending from the butt surface, the clip comprising two plate portions each of which is generally planar and adapted to be a force fit into one of the slots and each of which is provided with retention means adapted to resist removal from the slot, wherein the clip is generally planar but bent at the junction between the two plate portions so that the plate portions are inclined at a small angle so one another, the resilience of the clip being such that it can be flattened so that the plate portions are co-planar.
According to a further aspect of the present invention we provide an assembly of two members butt-jointed together with the aid of a clip as defined in the preceding paragraph, wherein each member has a substantially flat butt surface and a slot extending from the butt surface, the plate portions of the clip are located in the slots so as to hold the butt surfaces of the members together, and the arrangement is such that the clip is flattened so as to exert a rotational force on the members which urges the butt surfaces of the members together.
Preferably, the retention means on each plate portion comprises a prong or prongs sheared and bent out of the plate portion and extending towards the junction between the plate portions. The orientation of the prongs is such that they facilitate insertion of each plate portion of the clip into a slot but resist withdrawal of the plate portion therefrom. The prongs are preferably resilient and are deformed when the plate portion is interted into the slot so as to tension the clip relative to the walls of the slot.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a clip according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an elevation of the clip shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of a butt joint formed with the aid of the clip of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a view on the line IV of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a section taken on the line V-V of Figure 3.
In the drawings a clip is indicated generally at 10 which is formed from carbon steel and rendered resilient and rust proof during the manufacturing process.
The clip 10 comprises two generally rectangular plate portions 11 and 12 which are arranged at right angles to one another so as to form an L shape. Each of the plate portions 11 and 12 is generally fiat, but the clip is bent along a line 13 which forms the junction between the plate portions 11 and 12 so that the plate portions are inclined at a small angle one to another. This can be seen most clearly from Figure 2.
Retention means in the form of two similar prongs 14 and 15 are sheared and bent from the plate portion 11 so as to extend outwardly from one side of the plate portion 11 and towards the bend line 13.
The end of each prong 14 and 15 is bifurcated to form two sharp points 16 and 17 respectively. The plate portion 12 is formed with prongs 18 and 19 which are similar to the prongs 14 and 15.
The clip 10 is used, as shown in Figures 3 to 5 to form a butt joint between two frame members 20 and 21. The frame members 20 and 21 comprises a part of a picture frame or similar frame element and as each of the frame members 20 and 21 are similar only the frame member 21 will be shown and described in detail.
The frame member 21 comprises a substantially flat web 22, upstanding side walls 23 anvil 24 and overhanging flanges 25 and 26 which form a partly enclosed slot 27.
Extending from the opposite side of the web 22 is a picture retaining flange 28 which forms a butt surface 29.
In order to assemble the frame members 20 and 21 together and form the butt joint shown in Figure 3, the plate portion 11 of the clip 10 is forced into the slot 27 in the frame member 20 and the plate portion 12 is forced into the slot 27 of the frame member 21 until the mitred end faces of the frame members 20 and 21 abut one another.
In order to force the plate portions into the slots 27, the prongs in the plate portions are deformed and flattened so as to urge the plate portions upwardly against the overhanging flanges 25 and 26 of each frame member. The prongs also bite into the upper surface of the web 22 of each frame member so as to resist withdrawal of the plate portion from the slot 27.
As the plate portions of the clip are forced home and the mitred end faces of the frame members 20 and 21 meet, the plate portions are forced into a co-planar relationship so as to place the clip 10 under permanent tension. The tension in the clip thereafter applies a rotational force on the frame members and urges the butt faces 29 of the frame members 20 and 21 towards one another in the direction of the arrows shown in Figure 4. This ensures a secure and relatively immovable butt joint between the two frame members 20 and 21 which cannot readily be dislodged or shifted and ensures that there is no gap between the members 20 and 21 on the outer face of the frame.
It will be appreciated that each of the four corners of the picture frame will be jointed with the aid of a clip 10 to complete the picture frame and form a rigid frame assembly.

Claims (6)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. clip is bent along a line 13 which forms the junction between the plate portions 11 and 12 so that the plate portions are inclined at a small angle one to another. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
