Description

(54) A VEHICLE HAVING SURFACE DE-ICING APPARATUS (71) I, SYDNEY DENNIS HUB BARD (British), 18 Lodge Road, Wallington, Surrey, SM6 OUA, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a vehicle having pneumatic tyres for travelling over a surface and de-icing apparatus.
It is well known that vehicles have difficulty in moving off from a stationary position on ice and/or snow covered surfaces. It is an aim of the present invention to enable the vehicles move off more easily than they have hitherto been able to from a stationary position on ice and/or snow covered surfaces.
Accordingly, this invention provides a vehicle having pneumatic tyres for travelling over a surface and de-icing apparatus, the deicing apparatus comprising a de-icing liquid is a container, spray means positioned near at least one wheel of the vehicle and which is so positioned as to be adapted to spray the deicing liquid on to the wheel tyre and/or the surface adjacent the tyre, and control means for causing the de-icing liquid to be sprayed through the spray means.
The vehicle of the present invention may be a motor vehicle such for example as a motor car or a lorry. The vehicle may also be an aircraft.
When the vehicle is a motor car, the container for the de-icing liquid may be positioned in the boot of the motor car.
The spray means may comprise one or more jets. The jet or jets may be positioned on a wheel arch for the wheel.
The spray means will usually be positioned near at least each drive wheel of the vehicle.
If desired, the spray means may be positioned near all the wheels of the vehicle.
The control means may operate an electrical pump for pumping the liquid from the container to the spray means. The control means may be operated, for example, by activating a control switch. Preferably, the control means includes a silicon controlled rectifier.
The control means may be effective to cause the de-icing liquid to automatically be sprayed for ten second periods every thirty seconds.
The control means may then include an override mechanism for over-riding the automatic periodic spraying facility. Usually, the control means will be located on a dashboard of the vehicle. The dashboard may include a visual indicator for indicating when the de-icing apparatus is in operation. The control means may be such that it is automatically switched off after a set period, for example thirty minutes.
One embodiment of the invention also extends to the vehicle when the de-icing liquid is in the container. Various types of de-icing liquid may be employed, it only being necessary that the liquid be suitable for relatively speedily dissolving the ice and/or the snow.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 illustrates a basic layout for the de-icing apparatus employed in a vehicle; Figure 2 shows a container for the de-icing liquid positioned in a boot of a car; Figure 3 shows part of another container for the de-icing liquid positioned in a boot of a car; Figure 4 illustrates the positioning of spray means on a wheel arch of a vehicle; and Figure 5 illustrates on detail the spraying of the de-icing liquid on to a pneumatic tyre.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a container in the form of a tank 2 containing a de-icing liquid. A conduit 4 leads from the tank 2 and the conduit 4 branches into two separate conduits 6, 8 at a T-junction 10. The conduit 6 branches into two further conduits 12, 14 at a T-junction 16 and the conduit 8 branches into two further conduits 18, 20 at a T-junction 22. The conduits 12, 14 lead to spray means in the form of jet nozzles 24, 26 respectively and these nozzles 24, 26 may be positioned adjacent the front wheels of a motor vehicle. In cases where the front wheels are not drive wheels, then these nozzles 24, 26 may be omitted if desired in which case de-icing liquid from the tank 2 will only be supplied along conduits 4, 8 to the conduits 18, 20.The conduits 18, 20 feed the de-icing liquid to further jet nozzles 28, 30 respectively and these jet nozzles 28, 30 will be arranged near the rear wheels of the present motor vehicle. When the rear wheels of the motor vehicle are the drive wheels, then the nozzles 28, 30 will always be provided, It will thus be apparent that it is desirable to ensure that the spraying means for spraying the de-icing liquid are arranged at least near the drive wheels of the vehicle and preferably also near the non-drive wheels of the vehicle.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3, it will be seen that the tank 2 is shown positioned in a boot 32 of a motor car. The tank 2 is provided with a filler cap 34 and the tank 2 is held in position by means of fixing straps 36.
In Figure 3, a stay member 37 is also shown.
An electrical pump 38 is niounted on the tank 2 and the pump 38 is effective to pump de-icing liquid from the tank 2 to the spray means such for example as the nozzles 24, 26, 28, 30 illustrated in Figure 1. The pump is provided with an outlet pipe, which has been shown in Figure 3 with the reference number 4 to correspond with the conduit 4 illustrated in Figure 1.
Referring now to Figure 4, there is shown a jet nozzle 28 positioned inside a wheel arch 40. The pneumatic tyre and the remainder of the wheel that would normally be inserted in the wheel arch 40 have been omitted for ease of illustration. It will be seen that the conduit 18 feeding the de-icing liquid to the nozzle 28 is clipped by means of a clip 42 to the inside of the wheel arch.
The jet nozzle 28 is shown in detail in Figure 5. It will be seen that the nozzle 28 comprises a body portion 44 and a swivel jet head 46 which can be swivelled with respect to the body portion 44 to ensure that a jet spray 48 is directed as shown at the junction where a pneumatic tyre 50 meets the surface 52 of the ground 54. It will be seen from Figure 5 that some of the spray 48 will directly hit the tyre 50 and some of the spray 48 will directly hit the surface 52 of the ground 54. The part of the spray 48 first hitting the tyre 50 will fall to the surface 52 of the ground 54 adjacent the tyre.Any ice and/or snow in front of the tyre 50 will thus be melted and the tyre will then be enabled to get a good grip on the surface 52 of the ground 54 so that the vehicle can easily move away from a standing position. The body portion 44 of the nozzle 28 is provided with a threaded stud 56 which passes through an aperture in a part 58 of the vehicle so that a nut 60 can be used to secure the nozzle 28 to the part 58 of the vehicle.
The de-icing liquid can be arranged to be sprayed on to the tyre 50 by operating a control means from within the interior of the motor vehicle. The control means will usually be arranged on a dashboard of the vehicle and activation of the control means may be effected by activating a control switch. The control means may include a silicon controlled rectifier and it will be effective to cause the pump 38 to pump the de-icing liquid from the tank 2 to the jet nozzles. The size of the tank 2 will obviously be varied to suit the size of the vehicle fitted with the de-icing apparatus and the number of wheels to be supplied with the de-icing liquid.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, it will be appreciated that the de-icing apparatus illustrated in the drawings could equally well be applied to an aircraft for facilitating movement of the aircraft from a stationary position over an ice and/or snow covered aircraft runway.
