Description

(54) SPRAY COVERS (71) I, GRAHAM JOHN MACKERETH a British subject, of 10 Beech Road, Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - This invention relates to spray covers for the cockpits of canoes.
A known spray cover is made of flexible waterproof material in two parts, namely, an upper or tunnel part with an opening for engaging the waist of a canoeist and a lower or lap part, with an opening for engaging the rim of a canoe cockpit. The two parts are stitched together to give a sleeve-like whole. A spray cover of this kind has the disadvantage that, in use, a cavity forms in the lap part, water then collects in the cavity, and in time the water seeps through the stitching between the parts. The cavity formation can be avoided to some extent by providing the spray cover with a shoulder strap but even then the cover can still be pulled away from the cockpit with the twisting and turning of the canoeist.
The present invention provides a spray cover for the cockpit of a canoe, the cover having a cockpit engaging opening and a waist engaging opening with a shoulder fixing, in which a resilient tie is provided inside the cover between the forepart of the cockpit-engaging opening and the forepart of the waist-engaging opening of a length such that, in use, the resilient tie is tensioned from the cockpit rim via the shoulder fixing whilst the forepart of the cover remains slack.
One form of spray cover according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the single figure of the drawing accompanying the provisional specification which is a sectional elevation.
The drawing shows a spray cover 10 of flexible waterproof "NYLON" fabric made in two parts: an upper or tunnel part 11 having an opening 12 for engaging the waist 13 of a canoeist 14 and a lower or lap part 15 with an opening 16 for engaging the rim 17 of the cockpit of a canoe 18. The cover has a shoulder fixing strap 19. The parts 11 and 15 are stitched together at a seam 20. The opening 12 and the opening 16 are both hemmed to include an elastic band for gathering the cover about the canoeist's waist and the cockpit rim.
According to the invention a resilient tie in the form of a piece of elastic banding 21 is provided inside the cover between the forepart of the opening 12 and the forepart of the opening 16, the banding being stitched to the hemming at the opening 12 and to the hemming at the opening 16.
The length of the banding is typically 15 inches whilst the length of the forepart of the spray cover is typically 25 inches.
The elastic is continued for a short distance above the opening 12 where it terminates at a 2-ring adjuster 22 in which the free end 23 of the shoulder strap 19 engages. The cover also includes a handle 24 for pulling the cover away from the cockpit rim.
In a modified arrangement, the cover 10 is also provided with a piece of elastic banding at the rear part of the cover.
It will be seen from the drawing that the elastic banding 21 is held against the cockpit rim 17 by the action of the elastic band in the hem at opening 16. In this way the reaction to the tension of the banding 21 is taken by the cockpit rim.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A spray cover for the cockpit of a canoe, the cover having a cockpit engaging opening and a waist-engaging opening with a shoulder fixing, in which a resilient tie is provided inside the cover between the forepart of the cockpit-engaging opening and the forepart of the waist-engaging opening of a length such that, in use, the resilient tie is tensioned from the cockpit rim via the shoulder fixing whilst the forepart of the cover remains slack.
2. A spray cover as claimed in Claim 1 made of waterproof fabric in two parts,
