Description

PATENT SPECIFICATION
( 11) 1 580 552 ( 21) Application No 33752/79 ( 22) Filed 5 May 1977 ( 62) Divided out of No 1 580 551 ( 31) Convention Application No.
7613319 ( 32) Filed 5 May 1976 in ( 33) France (FR) ( 44) Complete Specification published 3 Dec 1980 ( 51) INT CL 3 F 16 D 3/58 ( 52) Index at acceptance F 2 U 552 554 562 572 ( 54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS ( 71) We, SOCIETE INDUSTRIELLE DE TRANSMISSIONS, a French Body Corporate, of 116 rue Danton, 92 Levallois Perret, France, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:The present invention relates to flexible couplings of the kind having a spigoted male element and a female element fitted with radial resilient inserts Such couplings are intended to transmit torque between two shaft ends which allows occasional irregularities in the transmitted torque to be taken up and also permits some misalignment between the shaft ends The present application is divided out of co-pending application no 18960/77 serial no 1 580 551.
According to the invention there is provided a flexible coupling having a spigoted male element with axial spigots and a female element fitted with radial resilient inserts between which the spigots are received in operation of the coupling, wherein the male element has a hub and a spigot-carrying ring which are joined together by radial lugs which are separated by cut-outs, allowing the spigots to be disengaged by rotating the ring and sliding it axially over the hub.
Advantageously the male element has a hub which is connected to a spigot-bearing ring by a distance piece which can be removed sideways.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show two embodiments thereof and in which:
Fig 1 is an axial section through a first embodiment of coupling, Fig 2 is a perspective view of a coupling and Fig 3 is a sectional view of a second embodiment.
Referring to the drawings, Figs 1 and 2 illustrate a first embodiment of the invention in which a male element of the coupl 50 ing has a hub 19 which is joined to a separate spigot-bearing ring The hub 19 has a series of spaced radial lugs 29 and the ring 30 has a series of companion lugs which are separated by cut-outs 31 In the assem 55 bled state the lugs on the hub and ring are joined together by screws To remove the ring 30, for example to gain access to the resilient inserts in the female element, it is merely necessary to extract the screws, 60 rotate the ring a fraction of a turn relatively to the hub so as to bring the cut-outs 31 opposite the lugs 29, and then move the ring 30 back and slide it along the hub 19 in direction fl (Fig 1) This method of 65 assembly, which is useful when the shaft ends are too short to allow the hubs 14 and 19 to be moved back to them, enables the spigots to be disengaged from the resilient element 10, one of the shaft ends to be un 70 coupled from the other, and the inserts 17 to be exchanged, and one member to be "unshipped vertically", i e without disturbing the neighbouring member The spigots are shown at 20 75 To facilitate the renewal of the inserts 17, the hub 19 contains at least two recesses 24 1800 apart between the lugs These recesses 24 enable the insert to be changed to be slid towards the hub without its colliding 80 with the face of the hub The spigots 20 may be cut away at 26.
Fig 3 illustrates yet another method of assembly in which the hub 19 is connected to the ring 30 of the spigot bearing element 85 by a distance tube 32 having attachment flanges 33 This distance tube may be removed sideways in direction f 2 after the screws have been undone and after the spigot-bearing ring 30 has been moved fully 90 m 00 00 If) 1 580 552 into the female element in order to clear the locators on the distance tube It is then possible to move the coupling and the member which carries the female element in translation towards the hub 19 for a distance substantially equal to the length of the distance tube This is how access may for example be gained to the rotor of a centrifugal pump which requires maintenance.

Claims (3)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1 A flexible coupling having a spigoted male element with axial spigots and a female element fitted with radial resilient inserts between which the spigots are received in operation of the coupling, wherein the male element has a hub and a spigot-carrying ring which are joined together by radial lugs which are separated by cut-outs, allowing the spigots to be disengaged by rotating the ring and sliding it axially over the hub.
2 A coupling as claimed in claim 1, 20 wherein the male element has a hub which is connected to a spigot-bearing ring by a tubular distance piece which can be removed sideways.
3 Flexible couplings substantially as 25 hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
