Description
(54) PLUNGER LANCE
(71) We, FRIED. KRUPP HUTTENWERKE
AG., of Alleestrasse 163, D4630 Bochum,
West Germany, a body corporate organised under the laws of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement::
The invention relates to a plunger lance for injecting solids in powder or dust form into a metallic melt, particularly steel, by means of a gaseous medium, said lance being composed of a metallic tube and a casing surrounding the tube composed of refractory nonmetallic material, in particular fireclay cement, which is strengthened by a reinforcement connected with the tube, which reinforcement is composed of several longitudinal ribs which are secured, particularly welded, onto the tube and distributed thereon in a peripheral direction.
With a known plunger lance of this type as shown in German Offenlegungsschrift Specification No. 2,626,892, the ribs are composed of flat iron which is welded in a star shape onto the outside of the tube. The free edges of the flat iron are interconnected at several points by a wire which is wound as a spiral round the longitudinal ribs. When such a plunger lance is used, vibrational cracks starting from the free edges of the longitudinal ribs appear in the casing despite the reinforcement, and thus parts of the refractory material chip off with the result that the casing can no longer sufficiently protect the metallic tube.
The object of the invention is to provide a plunger lance in which there is substantially no danger of cracks forming.
According to the invention a plunger lance for injecting solids in powder or dust form into a metallic melt by means of a gaseous medium comprises a metallic tube strengthened by means of several longitudinal ribs secured onto the tube and distributed thereon in a peripheral direction, each rib being formed by an angle section which, together with the outside of the tube forms a channel, and a casing of refractory non-metallic material surrounding the tube and the ribs.
The free edges of the flanges of the angle section are preferably welded onto the outside of the tube.
It has been shown that no vibrational cracks occur with such a plunger lance and therefore the use of such lances could be considerably increased in comparison with conventional lances.
The invention will be explained in more detail by way of example by reference to the drawing which shows a plunger lance constructed according to the invention, in crosssection.
The plunger lance shown is composed of a metallic cylindrical tube 1, in particular a steel tube, on the external surface of which three longitudinally extending equi-angularly spaced angle sections 2 are secured by the free edges of their flanges. To secure each flange edge a welded seam runs the entire length of each section 2. Angle sections 2 secured in such a manner on the tube 1 form hollow channel shaped spaces 3, by means of which the lance can be cooled. The tube 1 and the angle sections 2 are surrounded by a casing 4 composed of a refractory, non-metallic material, in particular fireclay cement. The refractory material is strengthened by raylike, rod-shaped reinforcements 5 each of which are secured with one end on the tube l or on one of the angle sections 2.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS 1. A plunger lance for injecting solids in powder or dust form into a metallic melt by means of a gaseous medium, said lance comprising a metallic tube strengthend by means of several longitudinal ribs secured onto the tube and distributed thereon in a peripheral direction, each rib being formed by an angle section which, together with the outside of the tube, forms a channel, and a casing of refractory non-metallic material surrounding the tube and the ribs.
2. A plunger lance according to claim 1, wherein the free edges of the flanges of the
**WARNING** end of DESC field may overlap start of CLMS **.
Claims (3)
2. A plunger lance according to claim 1, wherein the free edges of the flanges of the angle section are welded onto the outside of the tube.
3. A plunger lance substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
