Abstract

Zinc sulphide is prepared by a wet process from granular zinc carbonate or zinc oxide obtained therefrom by treatment with caustic soda or potash. The granular zinc carbonate is obtained by passing carbon dioxide into a solution of a zinc salt, in the presence of magnesia or magnesium carbonate. Excess of the zinc oxide or carbonate is suspended in a dilute solution of a zinc salt or in a dilute solution of an acid such as hydrochloric acid; in the latter case a portion of the oxide or carbonate is dissolved. On passing sulphuretted hydrogen, zinc sulphide is precipitated, and the acid which is simultaneously liberated prevents the formation of oxysulphides or polysulphides. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also contains the following subject-matter:-Magnesia and hydrochloric acid are recovered from the magnesium chloride resulting when the zinc carbonate is precipitated from zinc chloride solution. The basic carbonate is precipitated by the addition of magnesia to the magnesium chloride and is calcined after filtration. Zinc oxide may be obtained by calcination of the granular zinc carbonate; zinc sulphide may also be prepared by precipitation from a solution of the granular zinc carbonate or oxide in acetic acid or in dilute mineral acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
