Description

(54) IMPROVMENTS IN OR RELATING TO WOVEN FABRICS CONSISTING WHOLLY OR PARTIALLY OF METAL WIRE (71) We, G. BOPP & CO. AG, of Bachmannweg 20, CH-8046 Zurich, Switzerland, a Swiss Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a woven fabric of the kind (herein called "the kind defined") which comprises metal wires wholly or partially constituting at least one of the warp and the weft. Such a fabric may be entirely metallic, or it may be woven for example from metal wires and synthetic plastics filaments or yarns.
A woven fabric of the kind defined according to the invention is characterised in that it is woven alternately singly and doubly in only one direction parallel to the warp or parallel to the weft and in consequence comprises elongated cells of tubular form extend ing lengthwise in the said direction and spaced from but interconnected with one another by singleWwoven intermediate strips, or it is woven alternately singly and doubly in two directions respectively parallel to the warp and the weft and in consequence comprises cells of pocket form and single-woven intermediate portions interconnected with one another.
A known metal wire tubular woven fabric can be woven only with a width corresponding to the weaving width. A fabric embodying the invention, however, may possess a plurality of tubular cells, the widths of these cells being selectable. Such a fabric can be cut apart along the intermediate strips. in order thus to produce for example separate tubes or pairs of tubes.
The two walls of each cell can consist of different materials, and may be formed for example from wire of different metals, or one wall of each and every cell can be formed from metal wires and the other wall thereof can be formed from synthetic plastics filaments or yarns. The fabric may consist of materials of different elasticities, so that at least one of the two walls of each cell is domed outwards.
Fabrics embodying the invention have numerous possibilities of use, for example in filtration. By way of example, flexible filter tubes can be produced in a rational manner from a woven fabric having tubular cells, which filter tubes may be well able to with- stand the mechanical stresses due to vibrations during filter cleansing. A fabric in which the cells have outwardly domed cell walls can be used if it is desired that the superficial surface shall be of greater area than the plane area between the margins of the fabric, for example to fill a space, or if the cells of tubular or pocket form are to serve as porous receptables, for example for materials in powder form.By way of example, in an electric accumulator the negative plates which carry an active composition, for example cadmium powder in an NiCd accumulator, these plates can be produced from such a cellular woven fabric, the active composition being enclosed in the cells.
Hitherto the cells of such plates were produced for example from perforated sheet metal, which is considerably more expensive.
How the invention may be put into practice is described in greater detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein the sole Figure shows a diagrammatic, fragmentary cross-section through a fabric embodying the invention.
The diagrammatically illustrated woven fabric is alternately singly and doubly woven, so that it has elongated tubular cells 2 (double weave) spaced from but interconnected with one another by fabric intermediate strips 1 (single weave). The alteration in the type of weaving can take place either to obtain tubular cells 2 of which the lengths extend in the direction parallel to the warp or in the direction parallel to the weft.
If the lengths of the tubular cells 2 extend in the direction parallel to the weft there is the advantage that the woven fabric can be rolled up more easily.
The weaving can, however, be effected to produce closed cells 2 of pocket form and single woven intermediate portions.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: - 1. A woven fabric of the kind which comprises metal wires wholly or partially constituting at least one of the warp and the weft, characterised in that it is woven alternately singly and doubly in only one direction parallel to the warp or parallel to the weft and in consequence comprises elongated cells of tubular form extending lengthwise in the said one direction and spaced from but interconnected with one another by single-woven intermediate Strips, or it is woven alternately singly and doubly in two directions respectively parallel to the warp and the weft and in consequence comprises cells of pocket form and intermediate single-woven portions interconnected with one another.
2. A fabric according to Claim 1, wherein one cell wall of each cell consists of material different from that of the other cell wall thereof.
3. A fabric according to Claim 2, wherein one of the two cell walls is formed from wires of metals different from that of the other cell wall.
4. A fabric according to Claim 2, wherein one cell wall of each cell is formed from metal wire and the other cell wall is formed from synthetic plastics filament or yarn.
5. A fabric according to any one of the preceding Claims, comprising materials of different elasticities so that at least one wall of each cell its v domed.
