Direct liquid-pressure apparatus-In oil tanks wherein the oil is stored over a displacement liquid, such as water, means are provided within the tank whereby a variation in the volume of oil (due to filling or drawing-off) effects a complementary variation in the volume of water, thus maintaining a substantially-constant level of oil and preventing the drawing-in or displacement of air, so that the formation of an explosive mixture and the loss of the more volatile constituents of the oil are avoided. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, variations in the level of the oil due to the introduction or discharge of oil through a pipe C affect a float H connnected by a rod J to a valve device G, whereby water is admitted through a pipe E when oil is drawn off, and is discharged through a pipe F when oil is introduced, thus maintaining a constant upper level of oil. In a modification, the rod J is secured to the tank roof, which has sufficient flexibility to respond to the slight changes in the internal pressure as oil is introduced or withdrawn.
