Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN GRASS BOB-SLEIGHS (71) We, EDWARD JOHN GREGSON, of Badger's Holt, Marley Lane, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 3PZ, a British subject, and RICHARD DOUGLAS WORTHINGTON, of 38 Beech Avenue, Chichester, West Essex, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement : This invention relates to a grass bob-sleigh for supporting the human body in either the prone, the supine or the sitting position.
According to the invention the grass bobsleight comprises a support for a human body with a means for maintaining himself thereon, and three or more parallel arranged longitudinally spaced spindles upon which the support is mounted, each spindle carrying a roller or a set of rollers, the roller or the set of rollers extending over substantially the full width of the support and being rotatably mounted on the spindle. One or more of the spindles may be located further below the body support than the other spindle or spindles in such a way that it is possible for the grass bob-sleigh to run for a short period of time on one only of the rollers located between the rollers at the forward and rear ends of the grass bob-sleigh, thereby making it possible for the grass bob-sleigh to be steered by means of a movement of the human body, or by the pressure on the ground of one hand or foot.
Preferably each roller is cylindrical or substantially cylindrical.
The body support comprises a body plate and a pair of side plates depending from the body plate and each spindle extends between the side plates.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grass bobsleigh according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the grass bobsleigh of Figure 1.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the present grass bob-sleigh includes a body plate 1 which is supported on three or more ground engaging rollers 2 each mounted on a spindle 3.
The body plate 1 has dimensions sufficient to provide stable and adequate support for a human body in either the prone, the supine or the sitting position, while moving downhill over rough ground. Depending from the body support are respective side plates 4 and 5 by means of which the body plate is supported on the ground rollers 2 as hereinafter described.
For supporting the body plate 1 on the ground rollers 2 three or more spindles 3 extend between the side plates 4 and 5 of the bob-sleigh, disposed longitudinally and spaced at suitable intervals, the forward spindle being close to the forward end of the sideplates and the rear spindle close to the rear end of the sideplates 4 and 5. The spindles are disposed at vertical locations which are decreased in relation to the body plate 1 in directions forwardly and rearwardly from a central spindle.
At the forward end of the body plate 1 is mounted a transverse bar 6 extending beyond the sideplates 4 and 5, on which the feet or hands may be rested, when sitting or lying on the grass bob-sleigh.
Towards the rear and on top of the body plate is adhesively secured a pad 7 of rubber or similar material to prevent the body slipping off the body plate.
In the above described application of the invention the body plate and the sideplates are made of wood. Aluminium, steel, a light alloy or a thermoplastic material can also be used, or any combination thereof.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A grass bob-sleigh comprising a support for a human body, with means of maintaining himself thereon, and three or more parallel arranged longitudinally spaced spindles upon which the support is mounted, each spindle carrying a roller or a set of rollers, the roller or the set of rollers extending over substantially the full width of the support and being rotatably mounted on the spindle.
2. A grass bob-sleigh as claimed in Claim 1 wherein one or more of the spindles located

2. A grass bob-sleigh as claimed in Claim 1 wherein one or more of the spindles located between the spindles at the forward and the rear ends of the grass bob-sleigh is located further below the body support thereby making it possible for the grass bob-sleigh to run for a short time on one of the rollers located between the rollers at the forward and rear ends of the grass bob-sleigh.
3. A grass bob-sleigh constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
