Description

(54) ABSORBENT PADS (71) I, PATRICIA DOROTHY VAN EMST S.R.N. British by birth, Dutch by marriage. "Mancroft Towers", Oulton Broad, Nr. Lowestoft, Suffolk NR.32 do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a pad consisting solely of two layers, the first of which consists of two gas and liquidimpermeable plastics sheets laminated together to form a structure having domed areas with air trapped therein and separated from one another by laminated areas, and the second of which overlies the domed areas and comprises one or more continuous sheets of absorbent material, said first and second layers being sealed to one another around the periphery of the pad by means of a waterproof adhesive.
Absorbent bed pads and dressings have been used for a number of years but have proved unsatisfactory because they are often non-resilient to pressure and the degree of absorption is limited, both factors contributing to bed sores, skin rashes, contamination of wounds and general discomfort. The aim of this invention is to provide a disposable resilient air-filled pad of substantially improved quality and comfort as opposed to existing non-resilient bed pads and dressings. The standard of hygiene is greatly improved by providing a disposable pad as opposed to non-disposable rubber and plastics rings, ripple mattresses, and nylon "sheepskin" rugs, which are expensive to buy, and because they cannot be adequately sterilized, are a contamination risk.
According to this invention there is provided a disposable absorbent pad (Figure 3 No. 4) consisting of porous fibres, such as nylons, cellulose or paper, together with an outer porous wicking sheet of cotton, nylon or other soft fibres (5) to hold it in position covering sections of air filled bubble polythene (1, 2, and 3), the outer edges of all these materials being subjected to a water-proof adhesive to secure them and prevent leakage.
The sections of materials used to produce these pads, dressings, diapers, or absorbent cushions, can be in varying sizes to aid nursing care. The sheets of bubble polythene are constructed of two laminated plastics films (1 and 2) between which compressed air is forced during the laminating process and trapped in dome-shaped compartments (3), equally spaced over the sheet of plastics. This laminated plastics is non-porous, and the air-filled domes or bubbles in a composite structure provide natural resilience, and are strong enough to support different body weights.
The sealed-air bubbles can be produced in varying sizes, the smallest sizes being suitable for wound dressings and nursery use; larger sizes being suitable for anti-pressure pads and cushions for the aged and infirm.
The sheets of bubble polythene (1, 2 and 3) with its plurality of air-filled domes, is air-filled and sealed during the lamination process before the absorbent cellulose (4) and wicking sheet (5) are applied. The aim of using this bubble polythene underneath the absorbent layer of cellulose is to provide a resilient cushion, which will collect excess moisture in the spaces between the air-filled domes; the base of said spaces being impermeable plastics, there is a minimum soiling of bed linen and other adjacent materials.
The bubble-polythene is non-porous, airfilled, and the walls of the domes contaimng air are also non-porous. The absorbent layers of the pad are not self-inflating in so far as they have to rely on added chemicals or liquids. However they are resilient on pressure because free air is able to circulate between the layers of the pad on movement, enhancing comfort, healing and hygiene.
The absorbent materials for the absorbent covering can include essentially any hydrophilic material or absorbent fibres which lend themselves to enhance this invention.
Examples of structures in accordance with this invention are given in the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sheet of laminated polythene comprising a plurality of pouches filled with compressed air.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a sheet of laminated air-filled polythene.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a sheet of laminated air-filled polythene with its absorbent outer layers such as cellulose, cotton and nylon gauze.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A pad consisting solely of two layers, the first of which consists of two gas - and liquid-impermeable plastics sheets laminated together to form a structure having domed areas with air trapped therein and separated from one another by laminated areas, and the second of which overlies the domed areas and comprises one or more continuous sheets of absorbent material, said first and second layers being sealed to one another around the periphery of the pad by means of a waterproof adhesive.
2. A pad according to claim 1 wherein the absorbent material comprises cellulose, paper, cotton or nylon.
3. An absorbent pad constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
4. An absorbent pad according to claim 1 in the form of a disposable bed pad, diaper liner, surgical dressing, or cushion.
